Mitchell Marsh to step up as Cameron Green’s bowling replacement in BGT 2024-25

Australia have received a much-needed boost ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as allrounder Mitchell Marsh prepares to bowl a no. of overs in the absence of Cameron Green. Marsh has confirmed that he will step up for his skipper Pat Cummins in the role of allrounder.

Notably, Cameron Green has been ruled out of the whole season, including the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as he is set to undergo a back surgery. Green’s absence was a big blow to Australia as he can contribute with both bat and ball.

However, Mitchell Marsh was confident of sending down a few overs in the series and will share the workload of the pace bowling attack. He will build on a bowling workload by playing in the Sheffield Shield for his domestic team Western Australia.

Mitchell Marsh speaks on bowling in BGT 2024-25

During the launch of the fixtures of the 2025-26 Ashes series, Mitchell Marsh spoke about bowling in the Sheffield Shield and his workloads in the build-up to the Test series against India.

He thanked Cricket Australia, Andrew McDonald, and Pat Cummins for looking after his workloads and building his confidence.

“I won’t bowl too much for WA, it’s all part of the building process to get ready for that first Test, It’s been a slow build. I’ve been really well looked after by Cricket Australia, Ronnie (Australia head coach Andrew McDonald) and Patty (Pat Cummins), with our planning and when I bowl,” Marsh told the reporters.

“I love bowling, so I’m looking forward to bowling for Western Australia this week and build from there,” he added.

Mitchell Marsh to step up for Pat Cummins

Mitchell Marsh further mentioned that he is ready to bowl as much as his team captain Pat Cummins needs him to. He feels that the role of an allrounder becomes important as they can give the other fast bowlers some much-needed break.

“Once you’re in the field of battle, you bowl as many overs as the captain needs you to bowl. I see the allrounder role as being really important, especially for when our bowlers need a bit of a break,” Marsh opined.

“I think if you look back at the last few seasons, our allrounders have bowled maybe 10 to 13 overs a game, which is not really a lot. But those 10 to 13 overs can be really important. So for me, it’s about preparing to bowl as much as I can, as much as Patty needs me to,” the 33-year-old added.

Mitchell Marsh to start bowling in domestic cricket

Mitchell Marsh played as a specialist batter for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield match against Queensland and scored 13 and 94 across the two innings. He will start his bowling workload from the next match and will slowly build up on it.

Marsh has had various injury issues throughout his career and it remains to be seen whether he can handle the rigors of Test match bowling over a period of five matches. He has bowled just once since his hamstring injury in the IPL, in the fourth ODI against England at Lord’s.
