NEW DELHI: A lower back injury that has “not responded sufficiently to rehabilitation” has ruled out Australia’s Mitchell Marsh from the Champions Trophy next month and cast him in jeopardy for the Indian Premier League.
In a statement, Cricket Australia announced that Marsh would not be participating in the Champions Trophy, which will take place in Pakistan and Dubai from February 19 to March 9. Marsh is also reportedly doubtful for the IPL, according to a few other reports.
“Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the upcoming ICC men’s Champion’s Trophy with ongoing lower back pain and dysfunction,” CA said in a release.
“The National Selection Panel and Australian men’s medical team ruled Marsh out of the tournament with the injury which has not responded sufficiently to rehabilitation.”
“His lower back pain flared in recent weeks leading the NSP to make the longer term decision for Marsh to complete a more extended period of rehabilitation,” it added.
Marsh, who was included in the competition’s 15-man squad along with all-rounders Aaron Hardie, Glenn Maxwell, and Marcus Stoinis, will shortly be replaced by a member of the national selection panel, according to CA.
“Marsh will now undergo a period of further rest and rehabilitation as part of his return to play plan. The NSP will meet to decide on a replacement for Marsh in due course.
“The deadline for the final squads for the ICC men’s Champion’s Trophy is prior to Wednesday 12 February,” CA said.
The Lucknow Super Giants have signed Marsh, 33, for the 2025 IPL season, which begins on March 23.
For the last Test of the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended earlier this month, Marsh was benched in favor of Beau Webster.
In the four Test matches, he had a mediocre performance. The right-arm medium pacer only scored in double figures once in seven innings and did not share much of the workload with the front-line bowlers.
