Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh recalled his dismissal against India’s off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25 series. Mitchell Marsh stated that everyone was laughing at him in the dressing room as he walked off despite not edging the ball.
Ravichandran Ashwin bowled a delivery that seemed to beat Mitchell Marsh’s bat in the first innings. Rishabh Pant and Ashwin made a half appeal, but Marsh decided to walk off the field. However, replays showed there was no edge, with the snickometer showing a flat line when the ball passed the bat.
Everyone Else Was Laughing at Me – Mitchell Marsh
During a press conference ahead of the third Test in Brisbane, Mitchell Marsh said that he thought he had edged the ball. Marsh revealed that he confidently told his teammates he had hit it after getting to the dressing room.
“Everyone else was laughing at me. Honestly, I just thought I hit it so I walked off. When I got to the chanegrooms they asked if I hit it and I said yeah I smashed it. And then the replay came up and the head went into the hands,” Marsh recalled speaking to the press on Thursday.
Marsh was dismissed for 9 off 26 balls. Earlier in the match, Marsh had a controversial moment when Ashwin appealed for an LBW.
The on-field umpire ruled not out, and the third umpire didn’t overturn the decision after saying he couldn’t find any conclusive evidence. However, a new replay angle later showed the ball had hit Marsh’s pad first.
Obviously a World-Class Bowler – Mitchell Marsh
The 33-year-old struggled to read Ravichandran Ashwin’s deliveries. Marsh described Ashwin as a world-class bowler and emphasized the importance of planning well and trying to get on top of such bowlers in competitive matchups.
“Obviously a world-class bowler, if you look up and down the lines-ups of both teams there are world-class bowlers everywhere. As a batter it is about planning as well as you can and trying to get on top of them,” Marsh would say about his plans against the Indian off-spinner.
Each Batter Has Their Own Plans – Mitchell Marsh
Marsh opened up about the team’s strategies against ace Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah for the upcoming match. Marsh said that the goal is to survive when facing one of the best bowlers in the world like Bumrah.
“I think each batter has their own plans. As a batting unit we back each other’s plans. I think when you have the best bowler in the world and you are just trying to see him off he is going to have one with your name on it. I think it is about applying pressure with your own method and taking the challenge on,” Marsh said.
“Everyone has their own plans and we all bat differently so (it’s about) the situation in the game. Sometimes you have to get through a spell and sometimes it is time to attack. We have guys in our batting lineup who just play differently.”
