Saving ground under Joel Rosario, Missed the Cut slipped up the inside exiting the final turn of the $100,500 San Marcos Stakes (G3T) Feb. 10 at Santa Anita Park and outfinished Planetario by 1 1/4 lengths.
Campaigned overseas before joining the Southern California barn of trainer John Sadler in the spring of 2023, Missed the Cut won for the second time in seven domestic starts for owners Bee Zee, Lanes End Racing, St. Elias Stables, Edward Babington, Edward J. Hudson Jr., and Lynne Hudson. His two wins in the United States have come at 1 1/2 miles on dirt in the 2023 Tokyo City Cup Stakes (G3) and over 1 1/4 miles on turf in Saturday’s San Marcos.
“Long distance is right up his alley,” Sadler said.
He was timed in 2:01.14 on a good turf course. He paid $4.40 to win.
Royal Ascot Eyed
- Sadler mentioned that ownership of Missed the Cut was interested in sending him to England for a race at Royal Ascot.
- That prestigious meet takes place in mid-June.
Pacesetting Balladeer crossed the wire third in Saturday’s race, 5 1/4 lengths behind the runner-up, but was demoted by track stewards from third to fourth for interference with Irish Prophet . The latter became the official show finisher.
The Framont-bred winner is a 5-year-old son of Land’s End stallion Quality Road out of the Sea The Stars mare Beauly .
