Leofric Sires First Winner at Monmouth Park

Darby Dan Farm’s freshman sire Leofric   sired his first winner Sept. 4 when his son Fidelightcayut  prevailed in a hard-fought stretch battle to win his second start by 1 3/4 lengths at Monmouth Park.

JD Business Ventures bred the colt out of the Stormy Atlantic daughter Beam Reach, who has produced four winners from five to race. The mare is out of the winning Seeking the Gold mare Quiet Reward, who is a half sister to Canadian 2000 Horse of the Year and champion grass horse Quiet Resolve. Beam Reach is a half sister to stakes winner Behemoth  (Giant’s Causeway). The immediate family also produced Canadian 2004 champion 3-year-old filly Eye of the Sphynx, who is the dam of Canadian 2009 champion 3-year-old colt Eye of the Leopard .

Fidelightcayut was first offered at auction at the 2022 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearling Sale where Juan Cortes bought him for $10,000 from Turning Point Bloodstock’s consignment. The colt was offered next at this year’s Ocala Breeders’ Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale by AVP Training and Sales but was bought back on a final bid of $27,000.

Darwin Vizcaya’s Hablan Los Caballos partnership group bought Fidelightcayut privately at OBS. The horse’s name came from a dream one of Vizcaya’s partners had about a winning horse that had this name.

“The name has no translation,” Vizcaya said. “I asked my partner, ‘Are you sure this was the horse’s name?’ He said yes, so we named this horse after his dream. Now the dream came true.”

Fidelightcayut started working at Monmouth Park June 11 with trainer Juan Carlos Avila and made his first start Aug. 13 at Monmouth in a six-furlong maiden special weight where he finished fifth. His next start was a 5 1/2-furlong $35,300 maiden claiming race where he was entered for a $40,000 claiming price. He broke sharp and led for the first three furlongs locked in a duel with Don’t Listen , who grabbed the lead in midstretch. Fidelightcayut fought back to win by 1 3/4 lengths. The final time was 1:06.60.

Leofric is a 10-year-old son of Candy Ride   who was a stakes-placed winner at 4 but did his best running at 5. In 2018, he won the Clark Handicap (G1), Fayette Stakes (G2), and West Virginia Governor’s Stakes (G3), and finished second in the Razorback Handicap (G3) and third in the Woodward Stakes (G1). He was retired with an 8-1-3 record from 14 starts and earned $951,040.

Leofric stands at Darby Dan near Lexington for $7,500.
