Next Tuesday, May 30, the License Review Committee of the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission will meet to determine the status of Richard Dutrow’s training license in the state of Kentucky.
Dutrow recently regained his license in New York beginning Jan. 17, 2023, after serving a 10-year suspension. The New York State Gaming Commission had revoked Dutrow’s license and issued the trainer a $50,000 fine when one of his horses, Fastus Cactus, was found to have traces of butorphanol in his system after winning a race at Aqueduct Racetrack on Nov. 20, 2010. A search of his barn also turned up three syringes of xylazine, a muscle relaxer.
Best known as the trainer of 2008 Kentucky Derby (G1) and Preakness Stakes (G1) hero Big Brown , Dutrow began training in 1979 and has saddled 1,812 winners from 7,207 starts with earnings of $87,572,940 through May 26.
Dutrow saddled his first winner since serving his suspension May 6 when Prince of Pharoahs won an allowance race May 6 at Belmont Park. He was also recently named as the new trainer for C2 Racing Stable and La Milagrosa Stable’s grade 1 winner White Abarrio following Churchill Downs‘ indefinite suspension of trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.
As per the KHRC’s notice, “the committee will reconvene in open session to vote on the participants’ license applications.” There are three other trainers, Patricia Brewer, David Ward, and Francesca de la Flor, that are also up for license review.

Dutrow had tried to apply for a license in Kentucky in 2020 but the KHRC elected not to rule on Dutrow’s license application, and they voted unanimously to allow him to withdraw it.
