The morning hustle and bustle of the Churchill Downs backside had long subsided by the time a Brook Ledge van rolled up outside of Michael McCarthy’s barn at about 4:30 p.m. ET. Yet, there was still a feeling of excitement and anticipation as Journalism , the expected Kentucky Derby (G1) favorite, stepped off the van and into the shedrow.
His arrival at his new temporary home capped a 12-hour journey from Southern California in which the bay son of Curlin landed in Indianapolis, Ind., before trailering to Louisville, Ky.
After a few laps around the barn, Journalism emerged for a bath under the watchful eye of his trainer, Michael McCarthy.
“It looks he traveled very well,” McCarthy said. “No complaints.”
The Santa Anita Derby (G1) winner will likely make his first visit to the Churchill Downs track April 23, and McCarthy plans to breeze him on either April 26 or 27. He races for Bridlewood Farm, Don Alberto Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Elayne Stables 5, Robert LaPenta, Mrs. John Magnier-Lessee, Derrick Smith-Lessee, and Michael Tabor-Lessee.
About an hour later, once Journalism got settled in his stall and was awaiting his dinner, fellow California-based Wood Memorial (G2) winner Rodriguez arrived in the first shipment of Bob Baffert-trainees set to compete Derby week. Also included in that shipment was Kentucky Oaks (G1) contender Tenma .
Citizen Bull , the 2-year-old champion and expected Kentucky Derby entrant, was not in this shipment of Baffert horses; instead, he is set to arrive with the second half April 24. Sixteen of the 20 horses currently in the field are now present at Churchill Downs. Japan-based Luxor Cafe is expected to arrive April 23 after clearing quarantine in Chicago, Ill. Grande and Chunk of Gold are slated to breeze April 25 at Keeneland and Turfway Park, respectively, before shipping to Churchill Downs.
All Derby entrants are required to be on the property when entries are taken April 26.
