Cricket West Indies (CWI) has faced a massive setback as long-stand CEO Johnny Grave is all set to leave the board. He believes that it is the right time for someone else to have the organization forward and work on the development of the cricket in Carribean.
Johnny Grave will be leaving Cricket West Indies by the end of October this year. He was in charge of the organization for the last 7 years and did a fantastic job in the role. One of his prime contributions was the way he enhanced the relations between the board and the players, who didn’t share a great relationship.
Apart from this, Johnny Grave also facilitated an MOU between the CWI and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA) that guarantees players designated windows for the IPL and CPL tournaments. He also made sure that in the agreement there is equal pay parity between men’s and women’s players by 2027.
During his tenure, Cricket West Indies also hosted the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2018, the U-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2022, and the recent Men’s T20 World Cup. he also played a huge role in the resumption of cricket after the covid 19 pandemic as along with ECB he ensured the biosecure environment.
Johnny Grave while talking about his decision to leave Cricket West Indies stated that it’s time for someone else to take over. He also expressed his wish to help CWI make more progress on Governance Reform. In an interaction with Cricbuzz, he explained:
“It’s the right time for someone new with fresh energy to lead the organisation and continue this important work and build on the strong foundations that are now in place.”
I wish I had been able to help CWI make more progress on Governance Reform and implementing the recommendations from the Wehby Report, make more progress at the ICC level with a more equitable model for International Cricket and do more to bring in new revenue to CWI specifically for grassroots cricket which is so important for the long-term health of the sport in the West Indies.”
CWI president Dr. Kishore Shallow hails Johnny Grave’s efforts
Cricket West Indies president Dr Kishore Shallow hailed Johnny Grave’s efforts over the last 7 years. He highlighted how he helped cricket resume after COVID-19 and also lauded him for contributions to the Cricket West Indies. He stated:
“Johnny’s efforts, particularly through challenging times such as the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as successfully hosting three World Cups have made a lasting impact on CWI. Appreciably, the organisation has taken many positive strides during his tenure.
“A standout achievement is the acquisition and full ownership of the Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG), which is now our headquarters and home to our Men’s and Women’s Academies. As we look forward to embracing a new chapter in the organisation’s evolution, CWI is poised to deliver the new strategic plan and enter a new era of governance. This transition reflects our commitment to adapting and innovating in response to the evolving landscape of cricket.”
