NEW DELHI: England fast bowler Jofra Archer is set to participate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) auction after initial confusion over his omission from the shortlist, according to a report from BBC.
Despite being on the longlist, Archer was not listed among the 574 players for the auction, raising questions about his IPL future.
However, the report in the English media has clarified that Archer, having previously played in the IPL, would have faced a two-year exclusion from the competition if he had not entered the auction due to new IPL regulations.
Archer, 29, has been managing a series of injuries since 2020, with a focus on his recovery following an elbow issue last summer.
His commitment to England’s white-ball team remains strong, and he has expressed a desire to return to Test cricket, despite not playing in the format for nearly four years.
The IPL participation could complicate his return to Test cricket, as it overlaps with the early rounds of the County Championship season, potentially affecting his chances for selection in future Test matches, including the Ashes.
Archer is among 38 English players in the IPL auction, including white-ball captain Jos Buttler and James Anderson, who has not previously participated in an overseas franchise league.
Notably absent from the auction are Test captain Ben Stokes, fast bowler Mark Wood, and batter Joe Root.
The IPL 2025 mega auction is scheduled for November 24-25 in Jeddah, with franchises actively preparing for the event.
Mallika Sagar will serve as the auctioneer, overseeing the bidding process as teams finalize their squads.
