As India gears up for the five-match Test series against Australia, Ravi Shastri has indirectly hinted that India’s pace attack might not have enough firepower to win the series.
Jasprit Bumrah will be leading Team India’s pace attack in the highly-anticipated series. The other pacers in the team are Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, and Akash Deep. Allrounder Nitish Reddy is another fast-bowling option. However, Ravi Shastri believes that India’s pace attack still needs to be bolstered.
The former India head coach said that Bumrah won’t be enough against the reigning World Test Champions and said that the BCCI should make sure to add Mohammed Shami to the squad as soon as possible. Ravi Shastri’s comments came after Shami finally returned to action after spending almost a year on the sidelines.
Ravi Shastri advocates Mohammed Shami’s return to India
“If anything, I would have wanted a little more support for Jasprit in the pace-bowling attack. So the quicker Mohammed Shami gets fit and is on a flight, I think it’s better for India,” said Shastri on the ICC Review show.

Shami returned to action earlier this week during the Ranji Trophy game between Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. The right-arm pacer marked his return to competitive cricket by taking a 4-wicket haul. He bowled 19 overs and registered figures of 4 for 54.
Shami returns to Cricket Action after a year
Shami has been on the sidelines since November last year. The ODI World Cup final on November 19 was his last competitive game before he was sidelined owing to an ankle injury. After the tournament, he had to undergo surgery that forced him to miss this year’s T20 World Cup as well.
While Shami has not been picked in the India squad for the Australia Tests, it won’t be surprising if he is added to the team for the later stages of the series.
Gautam Gambhir eyes Ravi Shastri’s record:
Current India head coach Gautam Gambhir will be eyeing Ravi Shastri’s record of winning a Test series in Australia as a coach. Under Shastri, India won a Test series in Australia for the first time in the 2018-19 season. The team went on to replicate the feat in the 2020-21 season as well.
