NEW DELHI: Veteran South African batter Faf du Plessis has been named the vice-captain of Delhi Capitals for the upcoming 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The franchise announced the appointment via its social media handles on Monday.
“You mean right now? I’m at home, where else would I be? Yes, that’s true, I’m vice-captain of DC and I’m very excited. Delhi’s been great, the boys have been fantastic, definitely feel happy and I feel ready,” du Plessis expressed in a video shared by the franchise.
The Delhi-based team secured du Plessis at his base price of Rs 2 crore during last year’s mega auction in Jeddah, after he was released by Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) ahead of the auction.
With this development, du Plessis is now set to be a guaranteed starter in DC’s playing XI and will assist captain Axar Patel in making crucial decisions both on and off the field. Having captained South Africa at the international level and led RCB from 2022 to 2024, du Plessis brings a wealth of experience to the leadership group.
During his stint as RCB skipper, du Plessis led the side in 42 matches, securing 21 wins and suffering 21 losses, with a balanced win-loss ratio of 1.000. Under his leadership, RCB reached the playoffs twice but fell short in the Eliminator on both occasions. Over the past five IPL seasons, he has amassed 2,718 runs in 74 innings.
Du Plessis and Axar will work closely with DC’s revamped coaching staff, which includes Hemang Badani as head coach, Venugopal Rao as director of cricket, Munaf Patel as bowling coach, Matthew Mott as assistant coach, Kevin Pietersen as mentor, and Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux as fielding coaches.
Delhi Capitals will kick off their IPL 2025 campaign against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24. DC remains one of the three franchises, alongside Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bengaluru, yet to lift the IPL trophy.
