Indonesia Open: Prannoy, Sindhu, Satwik-Chirag reach second round; Treesa-Gayatri knocked out

India’s men’s singles title contender H.S. Prannoy eased into the second round of the Indonesia Open, a Super 1000 BWF World Tour event, after the world no. 8 thrashed Kenta Nishimoto of Japan in straight games 21-16, 21-14 at the Istora Senayan sports complex in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Prannoy, the Malaysia Masters champion who needed 50 minutes to beat Nishimoto, will face NG Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong in the second round on Wednesday.

P.V. Sindhu finally got the better of Indonesia’s Gregoria Tunjung as she completed a 21-19, 21-15 win in the opening round. The Indonesian had beaten Sindhu twice this year.

Sindhu will face defending champion Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in the next round.

Meanwhile, India’s women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand made a first-round exit after they went down fighting against Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi of Japan in the opening round.

Treesa-Gayatri, the world no. 15 Indian combo, conceded a game lead to lose the match 22-20, 12-21, 16-21 in an hour and 12 minutes.

It was their fourth straight first-round exit in 2023 since they made a third-place finish at the All England Open in March.

World championships bronze medallist pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty, seeded seventh, progressed to the second round after their opponents – Christo Popov and Toma Junior Popov of France – retired while trailing 12-21, 7-11.

However, M.R. Arjun-Dhruv Kapila lost to eighth seeds, Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi of Malaysia, 21-12, 6-21, 20-22.
