Haryana storms into quarterfinals of Senior Men’s Nationals
Two-time champion and last year’s finalist Haryana stamped its authority with a 8-0 victory over Mizoram in a Pool B contest of the Hockey India-14th Senior National men’s championship at the SDAT-Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium here on Monday, thereby cementing its place in the last eight.
Mizoram did put up a fight in the first two quarters, keeping Haryana largely at bay.
From the third quarter, Haryana upped the ante. Current India Junior-World-Cupper Rohit, 20, turned out to be the star for Haryana, scoring four goals. Tuesday is a rest day and the quarterfinals will be held on Wednesday.

Sharma finishes 32nd as Warring grabs title in Abu Dhabi
Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma produced his best card of the week, a superb seven-under 65, in the final round to sign off at tied 32nd position at the HSBC Abu Dhabi Championships. After 71-73 on the first two days, Sharma had a great weekend as his final two rounds of 66 and 65 had an eagle each.
On the final day, Sharma, who retained his DP World card, had seven birdies, an eagle and two bogeys.
Paul Waring held off a stellar chasing pack to win the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship and claim his first Rolex Series title.
The Englishman displayed nerves of steel in his bogey-free closing 66 as he got to 24 under par and two shots ahead of four-time Rolex Series winner Tyrrell Hatton, with Race to Dubai leader Rory McIlroy, England’s Matt Wallace and Dane Thorbjørn Olesen a shot further back.
Waring had taken control of the first event of the new DP World Tour Play-Offs with a course-record 61 at Yas Links on Friday but saw his five-shot halfway lead reduced to one as he posted a 73 a day later.

Bhavesh Gour beat second seed Lakshit Sood 4-6, 7-6(6), [10-8] in the men’s over-30 final of the ITF Masters 700 tennis tournament at the Indore Tennis Club.
Alice Joy was dominant in winning the over-40 women’s title for the loss of one game in the tournament.

Aryan to open ITF men’s tournament against Dheeraj
Aryan Shah will open against qualifier Dheeraj Srinivasan in the $25,000 ITF men’s tennis tournament to be played at the MSLTA Complex from Tuesday.
The 18-year-old Aryan, who was inducted into the Davis Cup team for the last tie against Sweden, was the best performer among the Indians in the last tournament in Bhubaneswar, where he lost the semifinals to the eventual champion Dalibor Svrcina.
National champion Rethin Pranav, the quarterfinalist last week, will open against Dev Javia. Ramkumar Ramanathan, S Mukund, Siddharth Vishwakarma, Manish Sureshkumar, Karan Singh, Vishnu Vardhan, S. D. Prajwal Dev, Manas Dhamne and Sidharth Rawat will be some of the prominent Indian players trying to capitalise on an event in a familiar environment.
Khumoyun Sultanov of Uzbekistan has joined as the top seed ahead of Dalibor Svrcina, adding to the strength of the field.
Yuvan Nandal, Ishaque Eqbal, Rishi Reddy, Dheeraj Srinivasan, Vishnu Vardhan, Udit Kamboj, Abhinav Sanjeev Shanmugam and M Rifqi Fitriadi of Indonesia made the main draw by winning two rounds in the qualifying event.

Ashfaq and Ivana bag Kerala Sports Journalists Association’s best athlete awards
Quartermilers Muhammed Ashfaq of G.V. Raja Sports School and Ivana Tomy of Thalassery SAI were adjudged as the best male and female athletes of the Kerala State School Games athletics by the Kerala Sports Journalists Association (KSJA) on Monday.
The awards, in memory of U.H. Siddique (sports reporter, Suprabhatham, boys award) and P.T. Baby (Sports Editor, Mathrubhumi, girls award), were presented by former Indian football captain I.M. Vijayan at the Maharaja’s Stadium on the final day of the School Games here.
The 17-year-old Ashfaq had broken the senior boys 400m meet record and had also taken the 400m hurdles gold while 14-year-old Ivana clocked an impressive 57.71s while winning the junior girls 400m title.
The awards came with a cash prize of Rs 5,000 each which were presented by Ayisha Tanya, Director, Group Meeran.
