BOXING
SSCB crowned champions at the 5th Junior Boys National Boxing Championships
The reigning champions services sports control board SSCB proved their mettle once again to finish on top at the 5th Junior Boys National Boxing Championships in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh.
Improving their points tally of 59 points from the last edition, SSCB claimed 72 points with 10 medals that included 8 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze.
Mahesh (48kg) and Divash Katare (50kg) gave SSCB a dream start by winning their respective bouts with an easy 5-0 win. Mahesh overpowered Haryana’s Sikander with his swift moves in what transpired to be a one sided affair to grab the win. Divash followed with yet another dominating performance against Tamilnadu’s K Dastageer Shariff clinching the gold medal for SSCB.
SSCB ‘s Hardik Panwar outclassed Punjab’s Shriyansh forcing the referee to stop the contest (RSC) in round 1 to bag the gold medal.
SSCB’s Sahil Baord (52kg), M Kabiraj Singh (63kg), Rahul Kundu (70kg), Sahil (75kg), Hemant Sangwan (80+kg) also earned themselves a gold medal after their impressive performances.
Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh finished in second and third place, with 38 and 33 points, respectively. Both the teams concluded their campaign with identical medal tallies . While Haryana won 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, the hosts Arunachal Pradesh also finished their campaign with 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Nenthok Hodong was awarded with the best boxer award for his gold medal winning performance in the 54kg category.
TENNIS
Anirudh Chandrasekar and Vijay Sundar Prashanth were beaten 6-4, 7-6(8) in the doubles final by Andrey Golubev and Denys Molchanov in the 145,000 Challenger tennis tournament in Salzburg, Austria, on Saturday.
In the Challenger in Braunschweig, Germany, Rithvik Bollipalli and Arjun Kadhe were beaten in the doubles final by Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Arthur Reymond 7-6(7), 6-4.
The champion teams collected 125 ATP points and 8,420. The runners-up in both tournaments got 75 points and €4,900.
Third seed Swastik Sharma beat Arjun Rathi 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in the boys final of the AITA National series junior tennis tournament at the Joygaon Academy on Saturday.
In the girls final, Yashika Shokeen blanked Manshi Singh.

Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships: Indian men miss out on the top
Indian men missed out on the top spot but added three silver medals and a bronze to the host’s tally in the senior category on the fourth day of competition at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships at the Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida on Saturday.
On a day when most of the categories saw less than three competitors taking the stage, Harshad Wadekar totalled 347kg (155 snatch+191 C&J) in the 96 kilogram category, just one kilogram behind Cyrille TchatchetII of England, with compatriot Jagdish Vishwakarma finishing third five kilograms adrift.
Amarjit Guru finished second in the 89kg with a total lift of 312kg including topping the table in Clean&Jerk with 174kg.

BADMINTON
Former World Championship medallist Jwala Gutta’s Academy of Excellence (JGAE, Moinabad) hosted a one-month-long training programme for the shuttlers from Punjab.
The participants received personalized coaching from Jwala Gutta herself, along with a team of highly skilled trainers and experts. They also had the chance to interact with other accomplished players and gain valuable insights into the world of professional badminton.
“The Punjab Government supported 34 aspiring shuttlers and two coaches, who were trained intensely for one month under me and other renowned coaches including Dronacharya S.M. Arif,” Jwala said.
“We strive to let JGAE be known as a medium for enhancement of performance in badminton and for the overall development of personality and character,” she added.
Telangana Sports Minister V. Srinivas Goud and Punjab Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer, who was the chief guest, graced the valedictory function.
Mr Srinivas Goud lauded the efforts of Jwala in moulding young champions and hoped the State would continue to produce world-class shuttlers.
He reiterated the State Government’s complete support to sports and the performing athletes and hoped the new Sports Policy would address all issues concerning the sports fraternity.

SHOOTING
Prithviraj Tondaiman shot 72 out of 75 in three rounds to be in the 18th spot in a field of 196 shooters in men’s trap at the shotgun World Cup in Lonato, Italy, on Saturday.
Olympic quota winner Bhowneesh Mendiratta shot 22, 25, 24 for 71.
Zoravar Singh Sandhu started well with a round of 25, but slipped with two rounds of 21 each, for a total of 67.
Two more rounds will be played on Sunday followed by the final for the top-six.
In the RPO section, Asian Games silver medallist Lakshay Sheoran (68) and Lakshjeet Singh Sindhu (63) were not at their best.
In the women’s section, Manisha Keer shot 66 and was followed by Shreyasi Singh (64) and Rajeshwari Kumari (63). In the RPO section, Pragati Dubey and Kirti Gupta also shot 64 and 63 respectively.
