Indian sports wrap, April 6: Col. Rajpal Singh elected president of Delhi Judo Council; Chaterjee, D’Souza advance at G D Birla Memorial

Chaterjee, D’Souza advance with upset win

Bibhash Chaterjee and Rajesh D’Souza upset the second seeds Ayaz Bilawala and Gauram Ashram 21-10, 21-18 in the semifinals of the G D Birla Memorial Masters Inter-Club Badminton Tournament, co-hosted by Bombay Gymkhana and promoted by Badminton Gurukul, on Sunday.

The duo will take on top seed Naheed Divecha and Shailesh Daga, the pair which got the better of Anand Vithalkar and Priya Ambekar 21-4, 21-17, in the final.

Bilawala, however, kept himself in contention for a title by entering the semifinals of the Men’s 110+ doubles. In tandem with Rajesh D’Souza, the top seeds beat Anil Pandey and Vipul Shah 15-8,15-11.

Col. Rajpal Singh elected president of Delhi Judo Council

Colonel Rajpal Singh of Swatantra Club has been elected as the president of the Delhi Judo Council and Naveen Chauhan of the Indian Academy of Judo is the secretary general.

The elections of the Delhi Judo Council were conducted in the capital on Saturday.

“We are pleased to announce that Col. Rajpal Singh of Swatantra Club has been elected as the President of the Delhi Judo Council. His extensive administrative experience and unwavering commitment to the development of sports are expected to provide dynamic and visionary leadership for the Council,” the sports body said in a statement.

Sonam has been elected as the treasurer. Akram Shah, an Arjuna awardee, will head the athletes commission.

The election was conducted by returning officer Shivnath Kumar and observer Paramjit Singh of the Delhi Olympic Association.
