After suffering an ODI whitewash in Australia, the Indian women’s cricket team pulled off a roaring start to their home T20I series against the West Indies. The Women in Blue outplayed their opponents across all departments in the opening match to register a 49-run win and take a 1-0 lead in the three-T20I rubber.
India batted first and produced 195 runs, losing only four wickets in 20 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues scored a blazing 73 off just 35 balls while Smriti Mandhana chipped in with a brilliant half-century.
In response, the West Indies managed only 146 runs. Qiana Joseph missed her fifty by just one run and Deandra Dottin struck a fighting 57, hitting four boundaries and three sixes.
India bowlers also performed well. Titas Sadhu was the pick of the attack, finishing with a three-wicket haul. Spinners Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav each picked two scalps, ripping through the opposition middle order. Renuka Singh might have failed to take any wickets but conceded only 25 runs in her four overs.
India would hope to continue dominating the series in the second T20I. Another win would give them an unassailable lead. The match will be played at the same venue—Dr. DY Patil University Sports Ground in Navi Mumbai—on December 17.
The West Indies, led by Hayley Matthews, will be keen to learn and bounce back in the next match to keep the series alive.
