“If you keep changing the system…”

Former Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi has taken a sly dig at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for their failure to implement a system successfully.

Shahid Afridi’s comments have come following PCB’s recent actions in the wake of the Pakistan team’s poor performance at last month’s T20 World Cup. The Babar Azam-led side failed to do well in the tournament and suffered a humiliating group-stage exit. They started their campaign with losses against USA and India and even though they managed to beat Canada and Ireland, their efforts were not enough for a place in the Super 8s.

Soon after the campaign ended, the PCB decided to sack Wahab Riaz and Abdul Razzaq from the selection panel while also forming a new 9-member selection panel. They had made a number of changes before the T20 World Cup as well.

The new PCB administration sacked Mohammad Hafeez as the team director immediately after taking charge. Later in April, the PCB also removed Shaheen Afridi as the T20I captain after just one series and reinstated Babar Azam as the captain. They had also appointed Gary Kirsten as the new white-ball coach. The decisions, however, did not pay off as Babar Azam failed to lead Pakistan to a good position in the World Cup.

You must give the system time: Shahid Afridi

With the PCB once again introducing a number of changes, Shahid Afridi has criticized the administration. The Pakistan legend has said that the administration needs to give adequate time to a system for it to work. He highlighted that the PCB comes up with a new system every year whenever the chairman is changed.

Shahid Afridi said that the PCB officials and the senior Pakistan players need to come up with a concrete plan and work on it for a minimum of three years to get any result.

“When you change or bring in any new structure, you must give the system time. Every year, new chairmen comes and a new system is introduced. Things don’t work this way,” Shahid Afridi told Sports24.

“All the senior board members, senior players should sit together at one table and make a plan. Then let that plan be executed for three years. Let the results come. If you keep changing the system every year, what results can you expect?” he added.
