The Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit announced the resolution of three cases, involving two trainers, under its “early admission and acceptance of consequences” recourse.
These are the first three resolutions to controlled medication substance or controlled medication method cases brought by HIWU, which acts as the enforcement arm of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority. HISA and HIWU went live with their oversight of anti-doping and controlled medication May 22.
The first three resolved cases include:
• HIWU announced the suspension of trainer Douglas Nunn for 30 days beginning July 8 over the administration of an intra-articular injection within 14 days of post time of a race. Nunn also will be fined $5,000 and receive three penalty points under the rules that aim to discourage multiple offenses.
The horse involved, Smithwick’s Spice , will be disqualified from his June 9 victory in an allowance race at Delaware Park. Owner New Spice Stable will forfeit the winning purse of $29,250. With the disqualification, runner-up Silardi , campaigned by Rockingham Ranch, will be declared the winner.
• The other two resolved cases involve trainer Ricardo Legall and a horse he started May 28 at Belmont Park, Merchants of Cool , who tested positive for a pair of controlled medications.
HIWU announced that Legall was suspended seven days beginning July 6, fined $1,000, and assigned two penalty points for the finding of levamisole, a Class B controlled medication. He also was fined $500 and assigned 1.5 penalty points for a finding of dimethyl sulfoxide, a Class C controlled medication.
Merchants of Cool will be disqualified from this fifth-place finish in the May 28 claiming race, and owner Honor King will forfeit the $1,120 earned in purse money.
