Hardik Pandya amusingly headed the Mumbai Indians’ new latecomers list and was forced to wear Superman gear in a hilarious clip posted by the franchise on Friday, May 23. MI continued their funny practice of asking players and support staff members who arrive late for their practice sessions, team meetings, and travel arrangements to wear the franchise’s variant of the famous Superman dress.
Caught among others for arriving late on this occasion was skipper Pandya, who accepted the punishment and erupted in laughs alongside MI teammates Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Arjun Tendulkar, Naman Dhir, Trent Boult, Karn Sharma, and members of MI’s support staff. The Mumbai Indians captioned the video ‘Superman waali look, Shaktimaan wala swag’ as Pandya raised his hands as if setting off to fly in the style of Indian superhero Shaktimaan from the popular TV show.
Pandya has had much to smile about as the skipper of a resurgent Mumbai Indians side that has been on a dominant run. Staring down the barrel after just a solitary win in their first four matches of the IPL 2025, the five-time champions have clinched victories in seven of their previous nine games and secured a place in the top 4.
Overcoming the ignominy of a tenth-place finish last season, Pandya’s men cemented their play-offs spot by defeating the Delhi Capitals in a must-win fixture on Wednesday, May 21.
In their most comprehensive display of the tournament, Pandya’s juggernaut hammered the Capitals by a margin of 59 runs. Experienced batter Suryakumar Yadav’s tremendous 73 not out off 43 balls helped push MI to an above-par score of 180/5 on a tricky surface. Spearhead Jasprit Bumrah (3/12) and left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner (3/11) then combined to skittle the opposition for 121 all out.
Without being at his best, Pandya has played his part in the campaign, batting at a strike rate of 161 and taking 13 wickets with a best of 5 for 36. The skipper would be hoping for his team to continue their momentum as they now head to Jaipur for their final league clash on Monday, May 26 against the Punjab Kings. Another win could propel MI to the top 2 in the standings, giving them a stronger chance of regaining the coveted IPL crown.
