Harbhajan Singh hints at competing with Gautam Gambhir, Stephen Fleming for India head coach role after Rahul Dravid’s exit

Former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh has expressed his desire to take up the role of Team India head coach. The legendary spinner has raised his hand for the post as he believes cricket has given him so much and he wants to give it back.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is on the hunt for the head coach of the team in all three formats of the game. Current head coach Rahul Dravid is likely to part ways with the team because his tenure is all set to end after the T20 World Cup 2024, ending on 30th June.

The BCCI recently invited applications for the head coach position. The contract of the head coach will be for 3.5 years, ranging from 1st July 2024 to 31st December 2027. The appointed coach will have to be with the team for 10 months a year.

Ever since the applications for the role of head coach have been released, there have been various reports claiming about different candidates, who are in contention for the post. It is learned that the likes of Stephen Fleming, Ashish Nehra, Gautam Gambhir, and others have come under consideration.

Amid all the saga, Harbhajan Singh has also expressed his desire to take up the role. Although the former India off-spinner isn’t sure if he will apply for the post but according to him, the Indian team coaching will be about managing the players rather than teaching the skills to the players.

Speaking to ANI, he stated: “I do not know if I would apply. Coaching India is about man management, not about teaching players how to drive and pull. They know it very well. You can give some guidance to them. Cricket has given me so much and If I get a chance to give it back, I would be more than happy.”

Harbhajan Singh has been a great servant of Indian cricket. The off-spinner hasn’t had a coaching experience but with the kind of playing experience that he has, he could be handy for the team as the head coach of the team.

They did not play like a team – Harbhajan Singh feels appointing Hardik Pandya as captain didn’t go well with Mumbai Indians

Harbhajan Singh also talked about the poor campaign of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League 2024. He feels that although it wasn’t Hardik Pandya’s fault but appointing him as captain didn’t sit well with the team. He added:

“MI has a big team. I have played for it. The management is great and runs the team well. But this decision has backfired. Maybe the thinking was to look for the future. It seems that it did not sit well with the team as they did not look united. It was bound to happen. It pains me to see such a big team, an old team of mine face such poor results.

“Maybe the timing of the decision was not right. It could have been better had this decision been taken a year later. It is not Hardik’s fault, he was captaining really well in GT. The duty of the senior players is to keep players united no matter who is the captain. Captains come and go. They did not play like a team,” he concluded.
