Last out winner of the April 8 Bay Shore Stakes (G3) at Aqueduct Racetrack, Joey Freshwater will look to keep the win streak going when he takes a spin around Belmont Park May 12 for the $150,000 Gold Fever Stakes and joins a group of five other 3-year-olds sprinting six furlongs around the main track.
Trained by Linda Rice for Winning Move Stable, the Kentucky-bred son of Jimmy Creed has only finished out of the money once where his was fourth in a Churchill Downs maiden special weight in November on debut. Back out around the Louisville oval two weeks later, the colt won a maiden claimer and was picked up by Rice.
He fired off a third in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes in February before earning graded honors in the Bay Shore.
“He’s been training very well. This is what we hope we can do with every horse we claim,” Rice said.
Others in the field include undefeated Drew’s Gold , who is co-owned by trainer James Chapman and Stuart Tsuijimoto. The son of Violence was a winner of the Jimmy Winkfield last out. Brad Cox-trained Squire Creek who is 2-for-2 including an allowance optional claiming race at Keeneland last month, races for WinStar Farm and Twin Creeks Racing Stables.
