Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s future depends on the result of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT 2024-25) series against Australia. As per reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering appointing two different head coaches for both white-ball and red-ball formats.
Gambhir has come under scrutiny after the Rohit Sharma-led team’s humiliating 0-3 whitewash against New Zealand. Notably, it was the first time India suffered a whitewash in a home Test series (three or more matches). As per reports, Gambhir wanted to play on the rank-turners after losing the first Test.
New Zealand registered victories in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai. The Kiwis won the first Test by 8 wickets. They then recorded a 113-run win in the second game, followed by a 25-run win in the third match. The series only dented the chances of India reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025.
Gautam Gambhir Could Be Sacked As Team India Test Coach
According to Dainik Jagran, the BCCI may consider appointing separate coaches for the red-ball and white-ball formats if the Indian team struggles in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia.
A key meeting was recently held at the BCCI headquarters, where President Roger Binny, skipper Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, Gautam Gambhir, and BCCI secretary Jay Shah were in attendance. They had a six-hour review of the Indian team’s future.
As per the report, the decision to opt for a “rank turner” pitch for the Mumbai Test and the strategy behind resting Jasprit Bumrah was discussed during the recent review meeting. It was also decided that the BCCI may consider appointing separate coaches for the red-ball and white-ball formats.

Think Tank Aren’t On The Same Page With Gautam Gambhir
According to a PTI report, Gautam Gambhir and the team think tank are not fully “on the same page” after the Men in Blue’s recent losses. It’s unclear whether Gambhir’s coaching style was questioned, but some members of the team think tank are not in agreement with the head coach.
“It can’t be confirmed whether Gambhir’s coaching style was questioned or not but it is understood that some people in the Indian team think tank aren’t on the same page with the chief coach,” the PTI report stated.
Six-Hour Meeting Was Obviously On The Cards After Such A Debacle
There were discussions regarding Gautam Gambhir’s coaching style, which is different from his predecessor Rahul Dravid’s approach. A senior BCCI source said that the meeting aimed to review the team’s situation ahead of the upcoming tour of Australia, with the BCCI keen to ensure the team gets back on track.
“It was a six-hour marathon meeting which was obviously on the cards after such a debacle. India are going on a tour of Australia and the BCCI would obviously like to ensure that the team is back on track and would like to know how the think-tank (Gambhir-Rohit-Agarkar) are going about it,” a senior BCCI source was quoted by PTI as saying.
