FTHA Pledges Support to Oklahoma Horsemen After Tornado

The Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, located at Gulfstream Park, pledged its support to the Thoroughbred Racing Association of Oklahoma after a tornado struck Will Rogers Downs May 25 — killing one horse, while injuring and displacing others. There were approximately 150 horses at the track when the tornado hit.

The tornado, which caused widespread damage in northeast Oklahoma, damaged 14 barns on the backside and left the location without power and water. The aftermath also left horse trailers, travel trailers, and buildings significantly damaged. Because all power was lost and there wasn’t any water, owners immediately needed to evacuate horses to safety throughout the state in a short period of time.

“The Florida Thoroughbred Horsemen Association is dedicated to our motto ‘Horsemen helping Horsemen.’ When we were notified of the tragedy at Will Rogers Downs, our board of directors immediately pledged support to help the horsemen in Oklahoma impacted by the tornado,” said FTHA Executive Director Herb Oster. “We have mailed a check to help with the expenses incurred, including transferring displaced and injured horses.”

The FTHA’s mission is to foster, promote, and improve business conditions of the thoroughbred horse racing industry and those engaged therein, while protecting the safety of members, their stable personnel and the horses.
