Former India opener Gautam Gambhir never shies away from speaking his mind out. Time and again, the India great has grabbed the headlines with some highly controversial remarks.
Recently, he made a similar remark on former cricketers AB de Villiers and Kevin Pietersen. The former South Africa and England batters were critical of Hardik Pandya’s captaincy in the ongoing IPL 2024. Gautam Gambhir reacted very sharply to the criticism as he questioned de Villiers and Pietersen’s achievements as captains.
Gautam Gambhir, who led Kolkata Knight Riders to two IPL titles, slammed de Villiers and Pietersen and said that none of them managed to make any impact as a leader during their playing days. He went on to say that de Villiers has done nothing in the IPL ‘apart from his own scores’ as he defended Pandya.
“De Villiers and Pietersen’s records as captain are also not impressive,” Gambhir had said in a chat with Sportskeeda.
“What was their own performance like when they were the captain? I don’t think, be it Kevin Pietersen or AB de Villiers, they had any performance in their career with leadership. Nothing. If you pick and see their records, I think they are worse than any other leader. I don’t think AB de Villiers has achieved anything in the IPL apart from his own scores.

“I don’t think he has achieved anything from a team’s point of view, Hardik Pandya is still an IPL-winning captain. So you should only compare oranges to oranges. Not apple to oranges,” Gambhir had added.
Atul Wassan slams Gautam Gambhir:
Gautam Gambhir’s comments for de Villiers and Pietersen have not gone down well with former India cricketer Atul Wassan. The former cricketer-turned-commentator stated that Gambhir has a habit of creating controversies and he is at it again. Wassan went on to say that he does not take Gambhir seriously.
“What are you saying? He is trying to create a controversy and he has a habit of it. I don’t take Gautam Gambhir seriously,” Wassan told India News, as quoted by CricTracker.
Meanwhile, Gambhir is currently plying his trade as a mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024. KKR have booked their place in the playoffs by finishing at the top of the points table.
