‘Didn’t your father teach you..?’: Sunil Gavaskar asks Mitchell Marsh, gets quick-witted response | Cricket News

NEW DELHI: Australia achieved their first win in the 2023 ODI World Cup with a convincing five-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in their third league game on Monday. Mitchell Marsh played a crucial role with a match-winning knock of 52 runs, enabling Australia to comfortably chase down the target of 210 runs with 14.4 overs to spare.
Chasing a modest target, Australia encountered a shaky beginning, losing both David Warner and Steve Smithon successive deliveries. However, the fifties from Marsh andJosh Inglis (58) played a pivotal role in ensuring Australia’s comfortable victory. Marsh was particularly outstanding as an opener, taking on the Sri Lankan bowlers with nine boundaries in his brilliant 52-run innings.

After the game, the iconic Sunil Gavaskar, who is currently engaged in commentary duties for the World Cup, couldn’t resist having a playful jab at Marsh, invoking his father Geoff Marsh‘s reputation for a solid defensive batting technique. Gavaskar humorously questioned the all-rounder, asking if his father hadn’t taught him to play defensively, given his aggressive batting style.

Gavaskar gestured a defensive shot and said, “Didn’t your father ever teach you to play like this? Because all you’re doing is Bang, Bang, Bang.” However, Marsh responded with a witty and lighthearted remark that left everyone amused. He said, “I’m just making up for his poor strike-rates,” effectively turning the tables and drawing laughter from the audience. This banter showcased the camaraderie and humor that often accompanies cricket commentary.

ICC World Cup 2023 expected to inject $2.6 Billion into India’s Economy, here’s how

“It was a really good day for us. We came into the game with a little bit of pressure after the slow start, but our experienced guys stood up today. We’re away. I wouldn’t say soul-searching but there was plenty of hurt [after the loss to South Africa]. Hopefully, that’s a stepping stone for us in the right direction. Just making up for his [dad’s] strike rate. I felt like I was batting well tonight and I probably got ahead of myself (on the run-out),” Marsh said after the game.
“The boys were calm and the way we finished it off was great. I actually went for one over, but I was shut down. We have a heap of options – three quicks, Zampa, Maxwell, Stoin and myself. He [Cummins] always has a calm demeanor. The way he bowled and his bowling changes were fantastic. Inglis is a fighter and loves a contest. He plays spin well and backs his skills. First of all, he has power and hopefully it’s the start of a long career for him,” concluded Marsh.
