Comely Stakes 2013 Contenders & Odds

Las Vegas, NV – Aqueduct Race Track in Queens, New York will be the scene of the Grade 3 Comely Stakes this Saturday, November 30. A purse of $400,000 will be on the line when three year old fillies take to Aqueduct’s dirt track and go 1 1/8 miles.

A field of 10 three year old females will go in race 7 on Aqueduct’s Saturday schedule with a post time of 2:51 PM. Let’s take a brief glance into the credentials of all 10 combatants for this lucrative Grade 3 stakes.

Wedding Toast – Kiaran McLaughlin trained up and coming filly has only four career starts with three wins and a second place finish. Last time out was her stakes debut – a 3 3/4 length win in the minor Belle Cherie Stakes at Belmont Park after a 14 1/2 length Allowance Optional Claiming score with a 105 Beyer Speed Figure and a MSW win earlier this summer. She steps into graded stakes company for the first time Saturday and will have Javier Castellano in the saddle from post 2 as the 8-5 morning line favorite.

My Happy Face – Chad Brown trained filly has finished in the money in eight of nine career starts – the lone blemish coming last time out – a fourth behind Close Hatches, Sweet Lulu and Street Girl in the Grade 1 Cotillion Stakes at Parx September 21. Before that was a third to Sweet Lulu and Wildcat Lily in the Grade 1 Test Stakes at Saratoga August 24 and a second behind Princess of Sylmar in the Grade 1 American Oaks July 20. She was second in the Grade 1 Frizette behind Dreaming of Julia in October, she won the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes in November, she finished second in the Grade 2 Forward Gal behind Kauai Katie in January and won the minor Lotka Stakes at Belmont Park after nearly five months away as well. She has been at or near the top in every career start and will be looking to bounce back from her only off-the-board finish Saturday. My Happy Face is the 7-2 second choice and will have Joel Rosario aboard from post 4.

Street Girl – made her graded stakes debut with a fifth in the Grade 3 Azalea Stakes at Calder July 6 and followed that with a fourth in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at Saratoga August 23. Last time out was a respectable fifth in the competitive Breeders’ Cup Distaff after a third behind Close Hatches in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx September 21. Her best career result came in April – a nice win in the minor Calder Oaks which was followed by a sixth in an Allowance and a third in the minor Leave Me Alone Stakes June 8. Street Girl has 14 career starts (13 already this year) with just two wins, two seconds and two third place finishes. Jose Lezcano gets the call from the far outside post. Street Girl is 5-1 on the morning line.

Marathon Lady – broke maiden in her third career start at Oaklawn Park February 21 and has impressively placed in five straight graded stakes starts since – a second in the Grade 3 Fathead Bourbonette at Turfway Park March 23, a third right behind Manuka Honey in the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park April 10, a nice second in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes behind Fiftyshadesofhay at Pimlico May 17, a good third in the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park June 2 and a third in the Grade 1 American Oaks in July. Last time out however was a fourth in the minor Remington Park Oaks September 29. She has just one win, three seconds and three third place finishes in nine career starts for trainer Steve Hobby and goes off at 10-1 odds. Mike Smith will be aboard from post 5 Saturday.

Sheer Drama – will make her sixth career start for trainer Anthony Dutrow. Last time out was an OK second in the minor Belle Cherie Stakes at Belmont Park October 24 after two straight wins – an Allowance at Laurel Park in track record time and a MSW at Saratoga in August. She makes a step up in competition Saturday but looks ready. Sheer Drama is 10-1 on the morning line and will line up in post 7 with Irad Ortiz in the saddle.

Galloping Giraffe – Todd Pletcher trained filly finished fourth behind the terrific Princess of Sylmar in her Stakes debut – the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes in August and has gone on to a second behind Wedding Toast in an Allowance Optional Claiming September 11 and a win last time out in the minor Punkin Pie Stakes October 24. She has been competitive almost every time out and is listed at 12-1 odds. Rajiv Maragh gets the mount from post 8.

Teen Pauline – Todd Pletcher trained filly had a MSW score in her debut she finished a very respectable third in the Grade 3 Spinaway Stakes last September. This year she has a win, a second and a third place finish in five starts. She is coming off a third in the minor Pebbles Stakes October 14 after a second in the minor Riskaverse Stakes in August and an Allowance score three weeks earlier. Teen Pauline returns to dirt after three precious turf starts, is an intriguing 12-1 on the morning line and will have Rafael Bejarano guiding her from post 3.

Sky Girl – legendary trainer Bill Mott sends out Sky Girl, the only graded stakes winner in the field. He has three wins and two thirds in six career starts but is coming off her worst result in some time – a seventh in the Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes at Churchill Downs November 2 after his great win in the Grade 3 Dogwood on that same track September 21. Before that was a third in the Grade 3 Arlington Oaks and two straight wins. She will be looking to bounce back from a career worst effort but is 15-1 on the morning line. Junior Alvarado will be in the saddle from post 6.

Toasting – started her career with three straight MSW races with a win in the third. She was a very nice third in the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes behind Dreaming of Julia at Belmont Park in October but was fifth in the Joe O’Farrell Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Calder November 10. This year she had an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Gulfstream February 15 and followed that with a third in the OBS Championship (Filly Division) Stakes at Ocala Training Center March 11 and was third again in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes behind Marathon Lady May 17. She finished fourth in her last graded stakes action – the Grade 1 Mother Goose but has concentrated on minor stakes action since. Last time out was her best result – a win in the Dream Rush Stakes at Belmont Park October 20. Toasting has three wins, a second and four thirds in 12 career starts. She leaves from post 9 at 20-1 odds.

Flash Forward – has placed in five straight minor stakes starts but has failed to hit the board in her two graded stakes starts. She is coming off a third in the Belle Cherie Stakes October 25 after a second in the Zafig Stakes and a win in the My Flag Stakes at Saratoga in August. Flash Forward has two wins, three seconds and a third place finish in eight starts this year and is the longest shot in the field at 20-1 odds.
