With many of the country’s top horses awaiting starts during the prestigious summer meets at Saratoga Race Course and Del Mar, the latest top 10 rankings in the National Thoroughbred Racing Association Top Thoroughbred Poll were unchanged in week 24.
Godolphin’s Cody’s Wish , expected to race next in the $1 million Whitney Stakes (G1) Aug. 5 at Saratoga, continues to lead over stablemate Elite Power , owned by Juddmonte Farm, and the top-ranked older mare, Stonestreet Stables’ Clairiere . Bill Mott trains Cody’s Wish and Elite Power, while Steve Asmussen conditions Clairiere. Elite Power and Clairiere are also pointed toward races at Saratoga.
Fourth is Stephen Foster Stakes (G1) winner West Will Power , and fifth is Manhattan Stakes winner (G1T) Up to the Mark . In Italian , Defunded , Caravel , Art Collector , and Goodnight Olive round out the top 10.
Mike Pegram, Karl Watson, and Paul Weitman’s Defunded is the top-rated horse based on the West Coast, having won his last two starts in California for trainer Bob Baffert, capped by the May 29 Hollywood Gold Cup (G1) at Santa Anita Park.
Voting in the Top Thoroughbred Poll is conducted by national media and covers racing performances through July 9. The poll, which concludes Nov. 7 following the Breeders’ Cup, represents horses competing for Horse of the Year.
