Hill ‘n’ Dale Farms at Xalapa’s freshman sire Charlatan sired his first winner May 2 at Gulfstream Park where his son Copernium won his racing debut by 2 1/4 lengths.
The chestnut colt bought by trainer Jack Sisterson for $375,000 at the Ocala Breeders’ Sales March 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale from Top Line Sales now races for MHM Stables and John Oxley. He turned heads at the sale’s under tack show by blazing a furlong in :09 4/5.
Newstead Corp. bred Copernium in Kentucky out of the stakes-placed winner Hang a Star, a daughter of Tapizar and a half sister to New York stakes winner Empire Line (Morning Line ). Hang a Star is out of Homecoming Dance, who is a half sister to multiple grade 1 winner and 2020 champion turf female Rushing Fall. Copernium is his dam’s first foal to race.
Copernium quickly took the lead in the 4 1/2-furlong contest with a sharp opening quarter in :22.17 then cruised through a sensible half in :48.24 before stopping the timer in :55.58. The colt was ridden by Edwin Gonzalez.
Charlatan, a son of Speightstown, won four of five career starts and banked more than $4 million racing at 3 and 4. He was undefeated at 3 with wins in the Arkansas Derby (G1) and Malibu Stakes (G1). He stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale near Paris, Ky., for $50,000.
