Champions Trophy 2025 to move out of Pakistan? PCB breaks silence

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has broken its silence over the possibility of hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They have been bragging about hosting the ICC tournament for some time now.

Pakistan as a country has not hosted an ICC event in recent years. However, they were the previous winners of the Champions Trophy 2017 beating India in the final. Not playing a bilateral series against India might be one of the reasons behind Pakistan not hosting ICC events in recent times.

However, through desperate efforts, they have been able to secure the hosting rights of the tournaments. The PCB previously spoke about facing some logistical issues as they were preparing for hosting the event. An ICC delegation will be reaching Pakistan on Monday, March 25 for an inspection of the venues in Karachi, Rawalpindi, and Lahore. Pakistan is tasked with hosting an ICC event for the first time since it hosted a part of the 1996 World Cup with India.

The logistical issues include the unwillingness of the Indian government to send its team to Pakistan for the event. Another major problem is multiple T20 cricket leagues closing with the scheduling of the event between February and March 2025.

Major cricket leagues such as the Pakistan Super League (PSL), SA20, Bangladesh Premier League, and ILT20 are playing between February and March. Currently, both the board and the franchises are unsure about the schedule of the tenth edition of PSL next year. The possibility of the UAE hosting India’s matches is being considered. This could lead to the implementation of a hybrid model, akin to the 2023 Asia Cup, which might increase costs.

“The delegation will be given briefings on the preparations. They will visit the venues in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi to see the upgradation work we will be carrying out for the Champions Trophy,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi said on Sunday.

A delegation from the New Zealand Cricket Team visited the country last month to check the security concerns with New Zealand visiting Pakistan in mid-April for five T20 Internationals.

PCB Chief Rubishes Concerns Of India Not Playing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 In Pakistan

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed PCB chief sounded confident about hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and brushed aside concerns about the India team not turning up for the event.

“Why are we even discussing such possibilities. We had a good meeting in Dubai on the tournament and its technical side and as far as we are concerned we see no reason the event would not be held in Pakistan so why even discuss other scenarios,” he added.

The Indian team did not visit Pakistan for the Asia Cup last year. They played all their matches in Sri Lanka. They did not play in Pakistan as per the directives of the Indian government. The Indian team has not played any bilateral series since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks by Pakistan terrorists.

Since then both the teams have been playing only in ICC and ACC tournaments. Multiple efforts to resolve this issue have been made but nothing has yielded anything positive.
