Three-time world champion Carolina Marin, once convinced about retirement after the knee injury sustained at Paris Olympics, is now eyeing another comeback.
Marin was forced to concede her women’s singles semifinal against China’s He Bing Jiao after she sustained an injury on her right knee during the second game at the Summer Games in August. The third anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury of her career also meant that the 31-year-old Spaniard could not compete in the bronze medal match.
He, who eventually finished with a silver medal, stepped onto the medal podium thinking of Marin and held a pin badge given to her by the Spanish badminton federation.
According to www.bwfbadminton.com, Marin shared her thoughts with Xinhua about the injury at the presentation of a documentary covering her rehabilitation process. “When I broke my knee for the third time, I was convinced I was going to retire. But after a lot of reflection, I realised it would upset me if I was forced to retire through injury,” said Marin, who won gold medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.
The report also mentioned that Marin intends to make her comeback at the European Championships in 2026.
“There’s no rush but it’s been non-stop rehab. It’s important to build up the muscles first. I go step by step; I would love to retire on the court but I’m not in a rush.”
