2016 Buena Vista Stakes Race Preview

Stormy Lucy – was at her best at the beginning of 2014 when she won the Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes in March and the Grade 3 Santa Barbara Handicap but has been up and down since. She enters in good form however – a second last time out in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes here January 18, a second a neck behind Gender Agenda in the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes here December 27 and a great win over Gender Agenda among others at 65-1 odds in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar November 29. Before that were a fifth in the Grade 2 Goldikova, a third in the Grade 1 Rodeo Drive in September, an eight in the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes in August and a third in the Grade 2 Royal Heroine Stakes in June. Stormy Lucy now has eight wins, four seconds and five third place finishes in 33 career starts. She has just one win in the last 22 months but has been in every race recently. She hopes to build on three good graded stakes results from gate 10 with Kent Desormeaux in the reins.

Her Emmynency – has four wins and two second place finishes in seven career starts for trainer Michael Stidham and enters off good win in the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland October 10 and a decent second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks August 15. Before that was a career worst effort – a sixth place finish in the Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap July 19. She also finished second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante in August, 2014 and had two good wins early in her career including the Surfer Girl at Santa Anita. Her Emmynency, outside of one bad outing has been in every race and off a good win should be in the mix again this weekend. Joe Talamo gets the call hoping to maintain the serious upward trend – from post 9.

Prize Exhibit – British bred James Cassidy trained filly finished fourth in the 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and has been up and down since. She posted two nice wins early in the summer – the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes in June and the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes on this track in July. She went on to a respectable third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks in August and a second in the Grade 2 Yellow Ribbon Stakes in September. She struggled in her next two starts – a seventh in the Grade 1 QE II Challenge Cup at Keeneland October 10 was followed by a sixth in the Grade 1 Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar November 29. Last time out was another disappointment – a seventh in the Grade 2 Santa Monica Stakes here January 23 which followed a great win at 7-1 odds in the Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes on Santa Anita turf January 3. Prize Exhibit has shown form in the past but has placed in just one of her last four starts overall. Santiago Gonzalez will be in charge of the tough-to-figure-out filly from gate 6.

Keri Belle – John Shirreffs trained mare has 12 career starts with four wins, two seconds and a third place finish. She enters off a good win on this track – over Stormy Lucy in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes at 12-1 odds January 18 after a second in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Aqueduct November 26, an eleventh in the Grade 3 Athenia Stakes October 17 (her only other stakes action to date), a sixth in an Allowance Optional Claiming in August and an Allowance Optional Claiming score in July. Keri Belle has been up and down – but off her biggest career effort could be a factor – from the rail with Alex Solis guiding her.

Theatre Star – Tom Proctor trained mare has placed in 12 of 18 career starts – five wins, three seconds and four third place finishes. She won the minor Justakiss Stakes at Delaware Park in June and went on to thirds in a trio of stakes races – the Grade 3 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes on this track October 25, the Kentucky Downs Ladies Sprint September 14 and the Osunitas Stakes at Del Mar in July. Last time out was another third place finish in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes here January 18 which followed a close fifth in the Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes here January 3. She has placed in six of seven races heading into the weekend but is still after her first graded stakes score. Drayden Van Dyke will be in the irons from gate 12 Saturday.

Nashoba’s Gold – was at her best in 2014 when she won the Grade 3 Providencia Stakes and the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes on this track. She has only four starts since for trainer Carla Gaines and she hasn’t placed in any. Last time out was a fifth in the minor Kathryn Crosby Stakes at Del Mar November 7 which followed a sixth in last year’s Buena Vista Stakes, a ninth in the minor Megahertz Stakes in January, 2015 and a fifth in the 2014 American Oaks. Nashoba’s Gold hasn’t been seen much the last 20 months but hasn’t looked great in her limited action. Victor Espinoza has been tabbed with changing all of that from gate 4.

Smoove It – Doug O’Neill trained mare has four wins, five seconds and four third place finishes in 21 career starts. She looked good at this time last year when she posted three wins and two seconds in a stretch of five races including three Allowance Optional Claiming scores here and a runner-up finish in the Grade 3 Wilshire Stakes on this track in April. She has struggled in her last three starts however – a fifth last time out in the minor Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Turf Sprint here January 30 followed another fifth in the minor Solana Beach Handicap in August and a tenth in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes last May. Smoove It looks to snap an unflattering skid Saturday – from post 3 with Mario Gutierrez in the saddle.

Lutine Belle – Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly was last seen running fourth in the minor Wishing Well Stakes January 31 after an ugly eighth in the Grade 2 Monrovia Stakes January 3 and a third in the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes here way back on June 27. She failed to hit the board in three other graded stakes races – a fifth in the Grade 2 Honeymoon Stakes in May, an eighth in the Grade 3 Providencia in April and another fifth in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes last January 31 but started 2015 with a good win in the minor Blue Norther Stakes here on New Years’ Day. Lutine Belle now has three wins, a second and two third place finishes in 12 career starts and hopes for her first graded stakes score and first win overall in 13 months. Brice Blanc rides from post 7.

Paulina’s Love – Richard Baltas trained filly has three wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 12 career starts and enters off an Allowance Optional Claiming score her December 30 and a good second in the Grade 3 Autumn Miss Stakes October 17. Before that was a very disappointing seventh after setting the pace and tiring in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks August 15, a close third place finish in the Grade 2 San Clemente Stakes in her stakes debut at 12-1 odds July 19 and consecutive wins – an Allowance Optional Claiming June 5 and a maiden score in April. She has placed in five of her last six starts and will be after her first stakes score Saturday. Gary Stevens gets the call from post 11.

Glory – Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has three wins, two seconds and two third place finishes in 10 career starts. She enters off a disappointing seventh in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes here January 18 which followed a respectable third as favorite behind Gender Agenda and Stormy Lucy in the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel Stakes on this track December 27 and a two race win streak – both Allowance Optional Claiming races in impressive fashion. Glory has been OK so far in her career but looks for her first stakes win Saturday. Mike Smith has the mount from gate 8.

Chocolatier – French bred Blaine Wright trained mare raced six stakes races at home and didn’t place in any before debuting in North America with an Allowance score April 24. She has been OK since – an Allowance Optional Claiming score last time out at Aqueduct November 12 followed a fourth in a similar race in September and consecutive runner-up finishes in Allowance Optional Claiming races at Aqueduct this past summer. Chocolatier now has three wins and two seconds in 14 career starts and looks OK ahead of her North American stakes debut. Tyler Baze has the mount from post 5.

Stylish in Black – Bobby Wayne Grayson trained mare will hit the track for just the fifth time Saturday having recorded two wins and a second place finish so far. Last time out was a runner-up finish in an Allowance Optional Claiming here February 5 which followed consecutive wins at Del Mar in the summer. Stylish in Black makes her stakes debut in decent form when she departs from gate 2 with Tiago Josue Pereira aboard.

Moanin – Alternate Entry French bred Neil Drysdale trained mare has two wins, four seconds and a third place finish in 12 career starts. She may make her stakes debut off a fifth in an Allowance back in May on this track after a second in her North American debut – an Allowance Optional Claiming here in April.

Minks Aprise – Alternate Entry Jerry Hollendorfer trained filly has three wins and a second place finish in seven career starts. She may make her graded stakes debut off a sixth in the minor Wishing Well Stakes here January 31, an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Golden Gate in December, a ninth and a victory respectively in a pair of Allowance Optional Claiming races early in 2015.
