Las Vegas, NV – Santa Anita in beautiful Arcadia, California will be the scene of the Grade 1 Sentient Jet Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Saturday, November 1. Some of the best two year old colts and geldings in the world will be featured as they go 1 1/16 miles on Santa Anita’s main track for a purse of $2 million.
A field of 13 juveniles will take to the track in the BC Juvenile – race 8 on Santa Anita’s Saturday card. Post time is 2:43 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all 13 entries for this lucrative and intriguing Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup stakes.
American Pharoah 2-1 – Bob Baffert will send out American Pharoah for just the fourth time off a terrific win in the Grade 1 Frontrunner Stakes here September 27 and a 4 3/4 length win in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity September 3. His first career start wasn’t a good one – a fifth in a MSW on this track August 9 but he has certainly raised his game lately. Victor Espinoza will try to build tremendous last couple of starts when he leaves from post 5 as the 2-1 morning line favorite.
Daredevil 7-2 – Todd Pletcher trained colt has just two career starts – both wins – an impressive debut – a 6 1/2 length maiden score on this very track September 13 and a nice win in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park October 4. He hasn’t been touched yet and is expected to be competitive again Saturday. Javier Castellano will be in the saddle from post 12 as Daredevil attempts to remain perfect in his career.
Carpe Diem 4-1 – another Todd Pletcher trained colt will race for the third time – the first being a 2 1/2 length wire-to-wire maiden score at Saratoga September 1 and the second being a terrific win in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland October 4. Legendary jockey John Velazquez will be in charge of keeping Carpe Diem perfect – from post 9 Saturday.
Upstart 8-1 – Richard Violette trained colt started his career with two nice wins – the minor Funny Cide Stakes at Saratoga August 24 with a 95 Beyer Speed Figure after a maiden score at first asking. Last time out was a respectable second behind Daredevil in the Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park October 4. Jose Ortiz Jr. Get the call from the outside post.
One Lucky Dane 10-1 – Bob Baffert trained colt makes his stakes debut Saturday after finally breaking maiden last time out on this track in his third career start. His other starts were a second and a third respectively in a pair of MSW at Del Mar. Rafael Bejarano rides from post 11.
Souper Colossal 12-1 – Edward Plesa trained colt has three wins in three career starts but Saturday marks his graded stakes debut. Last time out was a nice win in the minor Sapling Stakes which followed a win in the minor Tyro Stakes and a maiden score in June – all three results at Monmouth Park. He tries to remain perfect in his career but makes a huge step up in competition with Paco Lopez in the irons from gate 8.

The Great War 12-1 – highly regarded Aidan O’Brien trained colt has seven career starts with three wins and a second place finish. He is coming off a nice win in a stakes at Curragh after an uncharacteristic eleventh and a second back in August. Ryan Moore gets the call from post 4.
Calculator 15-1 – Peter Miller trained colt has four career starts with two seconds and a third place finish – the seconds coming last time out in the Grade 1 FrontRunner Stakes here September 27 and behind American Pharoah in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity September 3. Before that was a fourth and a third respectively in a pair of MSW races also at Del Mar. Elvis Trujillo will be aboard from the rail.
Texas Red 20-1 – Keith Desormeaux trained colt will hit the track for the fifth time having posted a win, a second and a third place finish. He broke maiden two back at Del Mar August 20 by an impressive 1 1/2 lengths and was third last time out in his stakes debut – the Grade 1 FrontRunner on this track September 27. This after a fourth and a second respectively in MSW races. Kent Desormeaux will get the call Saturday from post 7.
Mr. Z 20-1 – has five career starts for trainer D. Wayne Lukas including four graded stakes already. Last time out was a good second in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity October 4 after a disappointing fifth as 6-5 favorite in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes September 6 and a pair of good seconds – the Grade 2 Saratoga Special August 10 and the Grade 3 Sanford Stakes in July. This after breaking maiden at first asking in June. Mike Smith has been tabbed to ride Mr. Z from post 4 Saturday.
Private Prospect 30-1 – Michael Campbell trained colt has four career starts with three wins and a second place finish. He is coming off a good second in his grade stakes debut – the Grade 3 Arlington-Washington Futurity September 6 after three straight wins including the minor Prairie Meadow Juvenile Mile in August, the Prairie Gold Juvenile in July and a maiden score at first asking in June. Jesse Campbell picks up the mount from post 2.
Blue Dancer 30-1 – Greg Tracy trained colt has four career starts – all wins. He makes his graded stakes debut off three minor stakes wins in Canada – the Ascot Graduation Stakes last time out at Hastings, the Winnipeg Futurity September 6 at Assiniboia and the Edmonton Juvenile Stakes at Northlands Park in July. He looks to keep the roll going with Rico Walcott in the irons from gate 3.
Lucky Prayer 30-1 – trainer Steve Asmussen sends out Lucky Prayer for the fifth time Saturday having recorded two wins and a second in four career starts. He is coming off a terrific win in the Grade 3 Iroquois Stakes at Churchill Downs September 6 after a second in the minor Prairie Meadows Juvenile in August and a fourth in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor Stakes at Churchill Downs in June. He is an intriguing 30-1 as he leaves from post 6 with Ricardo Santana aboard.
