Blow for Bangladesh! Shakib Al Hasan banned from cricket

Bangladesh’s legendary all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been banned from bowling in all forms of cricket. The ban has come days after he was banned by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for an illegal bowling action.

Shakib has been banned from bowling in all the tournaments run by ICC-approved national boards, whether they are international or domestic. It potentially rules him out of bowling in any tournament. However, the all-rounder can play as a pure batter.

The decision to ban Shakib was informed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) through a statement. The board also mentioned in its statement that he would be appearing for a reassessment at an ICC-accredited testing center in order to get his action cleared.

The BCB announced the news of Shakib Al Hasan’s ban through its statement. The board further claimed that the all-rounder would be permitted as soon as he gets his action cleared.

“The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has been informed that national team allrounder Shakib Al Hasan has been suspended from bowling in competitions under the jurisdiction of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). As a result, Shakib is also suspended from bowling in domestic cricket competitions outside Bangladesh and in international cricket,” the BCB statement said.

“Should the results of this (reassessment) analysis clear his action, Shakib will be permitted to bowl in international cricket and in domestic cricket competitions under the jurisdiction of all national cricket federations.” the statement further added.

ECB’s ban automatically applies to all tournaments

Shakib Al Hasan had an assessment of his action at Loughborough University, an ICC-accredited testing center in the United Kingdom (UK) after being reported for a suspected bowling action in a county match in September this year.

However, the allrounder failed to clear the assessment and was eventually banned by the ECB in accordance with clause 11.3 of the ICC’s regulations for illegal bowling actions. According to this clause, a national cricket board can suspend a player from bowling in its domestic tournaments.

The suspension automatically gets applied by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in international cricket and all the other national tournaments if various cricket boards. It does not take time to be applied as it gets happens without the need of any other formalities.

Shakib Al Hasan’s international career

Shakib Al Hasan is already at the end of his career after having retired from the T20I format a few months ago. His last T20I was in the T20 World Cup 2024 where Bangladesh were knocked out of the Super 8 stage.

He recently wished to play his last Test match against South Africa at Dhaka in front of his home fans but protests from a student group made his worry about his safety and he could not travel for the match in time. This effectively ends his Test career as well.

Although he is yet to retire from ODIs, he wasn’t picked for the series against Afghanistan and West Indies recently. Currently, he is appearing in the Lanka T10 tournament where he did not bowl in the last two games for his team.
