Allure of Money Shuts Down Maker’s Candy in NY Derby

Maker’s Candy  may have held the upper hand with bettors heading into the $150,000 New York Derby July 17 at Finger Lakes, but it was local hero Allure of Money  who polished off his sixth start—all over the Farmington oval—with a victory.

Breaking sharply from the gate under Luis Perez, Allure of Money was ushered to the front behind Tacony Road  in :24.09 until finding the lead in :48.93. At the top of the stretch in 1:13.79, Maker’s Candy had angled his way to second and gave chase under urging from Jose Ortiz. The two broke away from the field and duked it out to the wire with Allure of Money securing the win by a neck to finish the 1 1/16 miles in a final time of 1:46.82 over a fast main track. Mo Trump  was 13 lengths back for third.

Allure of Money ($16.20) improved his record to 4-1-0 from six starts and increased his earnings to $146,737. The New York-bred son of Central Banker   is conditioned by Michael Ferraro for Happy Face Racing Stable.

The bay colt entered Monday’s race off a 4 1/4-length win in allowance company last month, which was his first trip to the winner’s circle since the 2022 Tin Cup Chalice Stakes.

Allure of Money was bred by Cheryl Prudhomme and Dr. Michael Gallivan out of the unraced Shackleford  mare Alana’s Allure, who also has a yearling Mo Town   colt and a 2023 Vekoma   colt.
