In her first stakes start against older fillies and mares, 3-year-old Randomized proved up to the task as she led every step of the $232,500 Beldame Stakes (G2) Oct. 8 at the Belmont at the Big A meeting.
Klaravich Stable’s Randomized faced just three rivals—including two 4-year-old fillies—Sunday at Aqueduct Racetrack, which marked her first start since overwhelming other 3-year-old fillies in the Alabama Stakes (G1) Aug. 19 at Saratoga Race Course.
With jockey Joel Rosario showing the way Sunday, Randomized broke well and then settled into a slow first quarter, completed in :25.02. While the other rivals stayed close, the daughter of Nyquist was never seriously challenged in posting a 3 3/4-length win, completing 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.05 on a fast track.
This year’s Beholder Mile Stakes (G1) winner A Mo Reay launched an inside challenge entering the stretch but could not sustain that bid as she finished second. Grade 1-placed grade 3 winner Nostalgic finished third. Heavily favored Randomized paid $2.60 to win and $2.10 to place. There was no show wagering.
Rosario, who rode Randomized for the first time in the Alabama and returned for the mount Sunday, said the talented Randomized does need to be reminded to settle, which she did in the Beldame.
“She was very quick out of the gate. I was trying to get her to settle, because if you let her go, she can go :22,” Rosario said. “I was able to get into the first turn and get her to relax. She dropped the bridle really nicely and I feel like she did a good job.”
Rosario said Randomized is improving this fall.
“It looks like she’s getting stronger and better the older she gets,” Rosario said. “She looks very good. She was able to maintain her speed and she really did the work.”
Backstory
Trained by Chad Brown, Randomized did defeat older rivals in her maiden special weight victory March 31 at Aqueduct. She followed that effort with an off-the-board finish in the Acorn Stakes (G1) before putting together three straight stakes wins—the Wilton and Alabama at Saratoga ahead of Sunday’s score.
Klaravich Stable went to $420,000 to land Randomized at the 2021 Keeneland September yearling sale, where she was consigned by Four Star Sales, agent.
Breeding
Bred in Kentucky by Cove Springs, Randomized is one of three winners from four starters out of the unraced Elusive Quality mare French Passport. French Passport is a half sister to multiple grade 2 winner Smooth Air and grade 2 winner Overdriven .
Kentucky Derby (G1) winner Nyquist , a son of Uncle Mo , stood the 2023 season for $55,000 at Darley near Lexington. He entered Sunday’s racing as the sire of two grade 1 winners this year, Randomized and Slow Down Andy .
