As the excitement builds for the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1, all eyes will be on the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener Abhishek Sharma to shine with the bat against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, May 21.
Ahead of the IPL 2024 Qualifier 1 clash between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad, former Indian batter and cricket analyst Aakash Chopra hailed Abhishek and made some predictions for the young batting sensation.
Aakash Chopra hails Abhishek Sharm as a shining star
Chopra lauded Sharma as the shining star of SRH this season while highlighting his fearless and carefree approach to batting. He also praised the left-handed batter’s ability to maintain composure and deliver regardless of the situation, citing his performance in the last IPL 2024 match against the Punjab Kings (PBKS) as an example.
Despite the early dismissal of Travis Head, the SRH all-rounder showed confidence, played aggressively, and notched up a quick fifty to help his team beat the PBKS by four wickets to push the side to the second spot in the IPL 2024 points table.
Expressing confidence in the SRH opener’s potential, Chopra predicted that Abhishek would sport the Indian jersey within the next 45 days. He even went on to predict that the Punjab lad could potentially open for Team India during their upcoming tours of Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka.
Furthermore, Chopra stressed the importance of Sharma’s role in Qualifier 1 against KKR, particularly in facing the challenge posed by spinners Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy. With spin likely to be introduced early due to the presence of Travis Head in the SRH’s top order, the commentator noted that Sharma is the ideal player to handle the spin attack effectively.

Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel: “Abhishek Sharma is the shining star. If we focus on the last match against Punjab as well, they lost a wicket off the first ball, Travis Head, but it doesn’t matter to Abhishek Sharma that what has happened at the other end. He comes and plays in a fearless and carefree manner. Sharma Ji’s son will be playing for India within 45 days.
I feel Abhishek Sharma will open for India on the Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka tours. He plays extremely well and will have to play even better in this match against KKR because you will get Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy in the opposition. Spin might be introduced early because of Travis Head. So, you will have to get an Indian batter to neutralize spin – that’s Abhishek Sharma.”
Notably, Abhishek Sharma is in red-hot form with the bat, scoring 467 runs from 13 matches at an average of 38.92 and a strike rate of 209.42 for SRH in the ongoing IPL 2024. He also hit the most number of sixes (41) this season, and he would like to add to that tally in the remaining games.
