Shreyas Iyer was run out for just 3 against Australia in the series opener played in Mohali on Friday.

Shreyas Iyer made his India return after a brief break but a run out cut short his innings against Australia in Mohali on Friday. It was a forgettable outing for the middle order batter who had earlier dropped an easy catch of David Warner who capitalised on it and made a half-century.

Iyer scored three before he went for a suicidal run as non-striker Shubman Gill rightly rejected the call. However, he was halfway down the pitch when the throw came from Cameron Green and the wicketkeeper did the rest.

The innings was quite important for Iyer considering he had made a comeback at the Asia Cup after spending months on the sidelines while undergoing rehabilitation from a back surgery.

His return was shortlived though as back spasms limited his Asia Cup participation to just two games and in one of them, he wasn’t required to bat either.

With ODI World Cup now around two weeks away, it’s vital for him to get some match time considering he will form the backbone of India’s middle order.

Former India allrounder Abhishek Nayar reckons that the setback will not impact Iyer who has spent enough time playing cricket at the top level to understand his mistakes and how to rectify them.

“He’s a professional cricketer and being part of the IPL setup for a long time and this Indian team for a couple of years now, he understands that you made a mistake and the communication wasn’t great. It maybe wasn’t the right time to pick that single. India were in a comfortable position. But you expect Shreyas Iyer to come back from this,” Nayar said on JioCinema.

“He has come back before as well and I am sure he is going to be in a relaxed space because of the environment in this Indian team is where they are backing players. He knows he has done well over a period of time. A game or two is not going to define Shreyas Iyer. It’s just about him finding that one inning. Iyer has done it for India in this format,” he added.
