Sunil Gavaskar didn’t mince words while analyzing Shubman Gill’s batting performance in the ongoing third Test of the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane on Monday. The former India captain-turned-pundit asked the 25-year-old to ‘leave your image in the dressing room’ and fancy shots in ‘back pocket’.

Gill fell victim to Starc in the third over as India went two down for just six runs. Mitchell Starc bowled a good-length delivery pitching way outside the off stump. Gill went for an ambitious drive but failed to connect it properly. The ball got the outside edge of his bat before finding the clasps of Mitchell Marsh at the gully.

“Leave your image in the dressing room,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports. “Certain shots are dangerous at the start of your innings before you are set, and you don’t have the measure of what the wicket is doing. Keep all those shots in your back pocket. Take them out when you are 30-40-50 not out, then can you get those shots again,” Gavaskar said.

“Not very good shot selection, you could say. It was a very good catch, so there was a little bit of bad luck as well over there. But he could have left that ball alone; it would have gone harmlessly to the wicketkeeper,” he explained further.

Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal, too, had lost his wicket to Starc. On the second ball of the innings, he clipped a leg-sided half-volley straight to mid-wicket.

After Gill was dismissed on his third ball, Virat Kohli arrived at the crease to join hands with KL Rahul. The duo initially appeared to be a bit cautious. Kohli, however, failed to survive long and also edged an outside-off delivery by Josh Hazlewood. The former India captain scored only three runs off 16 balls before returning to the hut.

Rishabh Pant followed Kohli in the order. The southpaw also ended up being caught behind by Alex Carrey. This time, Pat Cummins got the job done for his team. When the rain played a spoilsport at The Gabba for the last time, Rahul and skipper Rohit Sharma were unbeaten at the crease at 33 and 0 respectively. At the end of Day 3, India were reeling at 51/4.
