Dimitrios Diamantakos’s spectacular header helped East Bengal prevail over NorthEast United FC by a solitary goal in a matchweek 10 encounter of the ISL 11 at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Friday.
Two red cards in the final quarter of the action — one each for NorthEast United FC (Mohammed Bemammer) and East Bengal (Lalchungnunga) — reduced the two sides to 10 thereby ending the possibility of a NorthEast comeback.
The host was able to endure the skirmish and maintain the slender lead till the end to pick up its first win of the tournament after a wait of seven matches.
Rooted to the bottom
The win did not help East Bengal’s position in the standings as it continued to remain at the bottom with four points from eight matches.
NorthEast United held on to the third spot with its previous collection of 15 points, after 10 matches.
