PSL’s survival in doubt as IPL clash set to wipe out foreign stars, team owners threaten PCB

The potential scheduling clash between the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Pakistan Super League (PSL) next year has left the PSL team owners worried.

The PSL franchise owners have written a letter to the PSL Director Salman Naseer and demanded clarity on the availability of foreign players for the season.

Pakistan Super League and Indian Premier League set for scheduling clash

The Pakistan Cricket League will be clashing with the Indian Premier League next year due to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 being played in the February-March window.

PSL is usually held in February-March but it has been pushed to the April-May window. The April-May window means it will directly clash with IPL, which is held from March to May.

This comes as a major blow for the PCB and PSL as the direct competition with the biggest T20 in the world – IPL – will do no good to them.

A source has revealed that the PSL franchise owners have written a letter to the PSL Director and asked to provide clarity on the availability of overseas stars and the schedule.

“The owners want the PCB to give them clarity which players would be available for the PSL if the IPL is also being held at the same time and also about broadcasting schedules,” the source told PTI.

PSL owners are worried because of lack of clarity – Source

Notably, the franchise owners are left in the dark about matters related to the Pakistan Super League, with the Pakistan Cricket Board focusing totally on hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 next year.

There is a fear among the owners that the Champions Trophy is the top priority for the board and PCB is ignoring the PSL matters.

“The owners are worried because of lack of clarity. The England and Wales Cricket Board and some other boards are talking about restrictions on their players playing in leagues so they want clarity ahead of the PSL players draft,” the source stated.

“Some of the franchise owners have asked Salman Naseer to follow up on the promise of setting up an independent PSL secretariat which has not happened in 10 years.”

Meanwhile, there is a possibility of more teams being added to PSL after the next edition as the franchises and the PCB revisit their agreements.
