Lungi Ngidi out for extended period as Temba Bavuma prepares for return

South Africa National Cricket Team have suffered a massive blow ahead of the Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out the entire series followed by the all-format series against the Pakistan National Cricket Team.

Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming two series due to a groin injury. This will come as a massive blow for the team, especially in the red-ball cricket. The Proteas Team are also in contention for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, and his absence will leave a massive void.

Lungi Ngidi is likely to make a return in January

Lungi Ngidi underwent a medical assessment as part of his structured conditioning period. It was during that only it was revealed in scans that he has bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy. He will now be undergoing rehabilitation and is likely to make a return in January.

Releasing the official statement, Cricket South Africa said: “Proteas Men’s fast bowler Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka, as well as the all-format tour against Pakistan, due to a groin injury.

“The 28-year-old recently underwent a medical assessment as part of his structured conditioning period, during which scans revealed bilateral proximal adductor tendinopathy. He will now begin a rehabilitation programme and is expected to return to play in January.”

Cricket South Africa also provided an update on Temba Bavuma ahead of the Test series against the Sri Lanka National Cricket Team. The Test skipper is making positive steps in his recovery and his availability will be decided after the fitness test.

Temba Bavuma will be undergoing a fitness test on Monday (18th November), and after that, a call related to his selection will be made. The statement from the cricket South Africa read:

“Test captain Temba Bavuma is making positive progress in his recovery from a left elbow injury and will undergo a fitness test on Monday, 18 November to determine his availability for the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which starts in Durban on 27 November.”
