Following up on his Canadian Derby (G3) win, August Rain scored his second graded victory in a row when landing the CA$125,000 British Columbia Derby (G3) Sept. 14 at Hastings Racecourse.
Bred in British Columbia by owner Peter Redekop, the 3-year-old Sungold gelding was sent off as the $0.85-to-1 favorite. He and rider Amadeo Perez were always in good position. They stalked the early pace in the 1 1/8-mile dirt race, then tipped four-wide turning for home to produce the winning run, prevailing by 1 1/4 lengths.
Moneyshot finished second, and it was another 3 1/4 lengths back to J Dutton in third. Final time over the sloppy track was 1:51.20.
Trained by Barbara Heads, August Rain won for the seventh time in 11 career starts.
