Las Vegas, NV – The Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks comes our way this Saturday, July 20 from Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York. Three year old fillies will be featured as they take to the track and go 1 1/16 miles for their share of the $300,000 purse.
A strong but small field of five females has been confirmed for the Coaching Club American Oaks – race 10 on Saratoga’s Saturday card. Post time is 5:45 PM. Here is a look into the past performances of all five combatants for this important Grade 1 stakes.
Princess Of Sylmar – Todd Pletcher pupil has won five of her last six starts – a second in the Grade 2 Gazelle Stakes to Close Hatches at Aqueduct April 6 being the only blemish in the last nine months. The wins include the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks last time out at 38-1 odds over Dreaming of Julia, the minor Busher Stakes at Aqueduct February 2 to follow another win at Aqueduct – the Busanda Stakes by 7 1/2 lengths January 4. She also has a MSW and an Allowance Optional Claiming score. She has emerged on the radar and is the name to watch Saturday.
Unlimited Budget – another very impressive Todd Pletcher trained filly is a three time stakes winner and was last seen June 8 finishing sixth in the Belmont Stakes against the boys. In the lead-up she had five career starts (4 graded stakes) and four impressive wins – March 30 in the Grade 2 Fair Grounds Oaks after a win in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes also at Fair Grounds February 23. She also won the Grade 2 Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct in November. Before the Belmont was her only other loss – a third in the Kentucky Oaks May 3 behind Princess of Sylmar.
My Happy Face – Chad Brown trained filly has alternated runner-up finishes and wins in her six career starts. She started her career with two MSW races and finished second and first respectively before graduating to stakes action. She was second in the Grade 1 Frizette behind Dreaming of Julia in October, she won the Grade 3 Tempted Stakes in November, she finished second in the Grade 2 Forward Gal behind Kauai Katie in January and won the minor Lotka Stakes last time out at Belmont Park after nearly five months away. She hasn’t raced much this year but is another strong threat in the Coaching Club American Oaks.

Cue The Moon – makes just her fifth career start for trainer H. James Bond. She is coming off a fourth place finish in the competitive Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont Park May 27 after an OK third in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Oaks March 30 – 25 3/4 lengths behind Dreaming of Julia. She also had a decent second by a neck to My Happy Face in the Grade 2 Tempted Stakes at Aqueduct November 4 and a MSW score in her debut over Emollient in September. Despite being lightly raced a lot is expected of the Spendthrift Farm’s filly.
Marathon Lady – broke maiden in her third career start at Oaklawn Park February 21 and has impressively placed in four straight graded stakes starts since – a second in the Grade 3 Fathead Bourbonette at Turfway Park March 23, a third right behind Manuka Honey in the Grade 3 Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn Park April 10, a nice second in the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes behind Fiftyshadesofhay at Pimlico May 17 and a good third just last time out in the Grade 1 Mother Goose Stakes at Belmont Park June 22. She has one win, three seconds and two third place finishes in seven career starts for trainer Steve Hobby and is the long shot in what is an uber-quality field for the American Oaks.
