CARF Formalizes Advisory Committee, Appoints Members

A Northern California Racing Affairs Advisory Committee that has existed informally since the announcement that Golden Gate Fields would close has been formally recognized by a vote of the California Authority of Racing Fairs board of directors.

The committee is comprised of owners, trainers, and breeders to support the efforts of the CARF Board and staff to ensure a successful meet in the fall of 2024 and keep in place a structure for future successes. The Advisory Committee brings together representatives of the industry to address challenges and opportunities in real time and ensure that future CARF decisions have the collective support of industry stakeholders.

“Our Advisory Committee has the experience and willingness to galvanize horse racing fans and make our sport economically viable,” said Larry Swartzlander, executive director of CARF. “This is the beginning of an exciting era for Northern California horse racing.”

CARF, collaborating with stakeholders, developed Golden State Racing for racing this fall at Pleasanton. Last month, the California Horse Racing Board approved their request for dates despite opposition from Southern California racetracks, which sought to redirect funds to bolster overpaid Southern California purses. Santa Anita Park has since cut purses for its spring meet.

“Northern California is undergoing a rebirth of enthusiasm for a sport too often willing to operate quietly,” Swartzlander said. “In many ways the closure of Golden Gate Fields was the impetus for us to reinvigorate horse racing in the North.”
