An allowance matchup of past Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) runner-ups went to the younger horse May 13 at Santa Anita Park when 5-year-old Dr. Schivel outran 9-year-old C Z Rocket by 4 1/4 lengths.
Both horses entered Saturday’s race after races in Dubai—with Dr. Schivel out of action since a third-place finish in the 2022 Dubai Golden Shaheen (G1) nearly 15 months ago and C Z Rocket finishing eighth in the 2023 renewal March 25.
Dr. Schivel spurted to the lead Saturday under Juan Hernandez, turned back a backstretch bid from a slow-starting C Z Rocket, and spurted clear leaving the turn and through the lane. He raced six furlongs in 1:09.19, paying $3 as the favorite.
Longshot Clem Labine was last in the scratch-reduced three-horse field.
Dr. Schivel, a 5-year-old son of Violence who won the 2021 Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Del Mar and later in the year was second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint, improved to 6-for-11 and his earnings to $1,119,100 with his triumph in Saturday’s $67,876 race.
