Josh Inglis delivered an unforgettable performance, scoring his first ODI century with an impressive 120 not out, eclipsing Ben Duckett’s stellar 165. This remarkable effort helped Australia achieve a record chase, defeating England by five wickets in their Champions Trophy Group B opener on Saturday.
The five-wicket victory marked the highest successful chase in ICC white-ball tournament history, surpassing the previous record held by Pakistan’s 345 against Sri Lanka during the 2023 World Cup.

Duckett’s career-best innings came off 143 balls and included 17 boundaries and three sixes, leading England to a formidable total of 351/8, which is now the highest score in Champions Trophy history, exceeding New Zealand’s 347/4 against the USA back in 2004. Duckett, too, established the record for the highest individual score in Champions Trophy history.
On a flat pitch at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore with a rapid outfield, Australia made the chase look easy, finishing in just 47.3 overs.
Inglis was relentless against England’s bowlers, smashing six sixes and eight fours in his 86-ball innings. His crucial 146-run partnership for the fifth wicket with Alex Carey, who contributed 69 runs off 63 balls with eight fours, was pivotal in turning the match around.
Carey fell in the 42nd over with 70 runs still needed from 50 balls, but Glenn Maxwell provided excellent support, scoring 32 not out off just 15 deliveries.
Inglis capped off the chase in style, hitting Mark Wood for a six over deep midwicket with 15 balls to spare.
Australia’s record tally after the win:
– highest total in Champions Trophy batting first or second
– highest successful chase in ICC ODI events
– second highest successful chase by Australia
– highest successful chase vs England
– second highest successful chase on Pakistan soil
