Saim Ayub’s future in darkness, confirms PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has provided an important update on opener Saim Ayub’s progress, along with a projected timeline for his return to action. According to the statement by the Pakistan Cricket Board, Saim Ayub is expected to be fit by mid-March after recovering from an ankle fracture.

The left-handed batter was left out of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 after suffering an ankle injury during the South Africa tour in December 2024. His recovery was a race against time, causing a delay in Pakistan’s official squad announcement for the marquee tournament.

Pakistan Cricket Board Provides Important Update on Saim Ayub’s Progress

Saim Ayub is undergoing rehabilitation in England following a right ankle fracture. He has been sidelined for 10 weeks from the date of his injury on January 3. The southpaw is likely to play for Pakistan in a white-ball tour of New Zealand, and his availability for the tour will depend on his results in fitness tests.

“Pakistan opener Saim Ayub is progressing well in his recovery from a right ankle fracture and will continue his rehabilitation in England. Following comprehensive MRI scans, X-rays, and medical assessments, Saim has been ruled out for 10 weeks from the date of injury (3 January). His availability for the New Zealand tour will be subject to clearing all fitness tests and medical requirements,” PCB’s statement read.

Saim Ayub Named to the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024

Saim, who made his debut in November 2024, played a key role in Pakistan’s recent series wins in Australia and South Africa. He scored 515 runs in nine innings at an average of 64.38, including three centuries. Ayub, who was named to the ICC Men’s ODI Team of the Year for 2024, was in exceptional form.

He scored two centuries in South Africa before suffering an ankle fracture during the second Test in January. He was flown to London for specialized treatment. Ayub, while initially placed on crutches, is progressing well with his recovery. He was expected to make a significant impact in the ICC tournament.

When Can Saim Ayub Return to Cricket?

Pakistan is scheduled to play a tri-series against New Zealand and South Africa, followed by the Champions Trophy 2025. After the tournament, Pakistan will tour New Zealand for five T20Is and three ODIs from March 16 until April 5.

Saim, who was the fifth-highest run scorer in the 2024 PSL with 345 runs, is recovering from an ankle injury. His recovery is being closely monitored by the Pakistan Cricket Board and his PSL franchise, Peshawar Zalmi. Ayub’s availability for the New Zealand tour will depend on his recovery and fitness tests.

The 2025 PSL is set to begin on April 8, just after the New Zealand tour, with a clash with the IPL. Ayub’s progress is key for both his national team and his PSL franchise.
