2017 Thunder Road Stakes Entries at Santa Anita Park

Bolo – has 15 career starts with five wins, a second and three third place finishes for trainer Carla Gaines. He was last seen finishing a disappointing ninth as 7-2 favorite in the G1 Maker’s 46 Mile at Keeneland April 14 after an OK third in the G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile here March 11 and a nice win in the G2 Arcadia Stakes on this track February 11 – his second straight win in that race. Before that was an ugly ninth in the G2 Eddie Read Stakes at Del Mar, a tenth in the G1 Woodford Reserve Turf Classic at Churchill Downs May 7, a respectable second in the 2016 G1 Frank E. Kilroe Mile in March and a win in the 2016 Arcadia Stakes. Other results of note include a twelfth in the 2015 Kentucky Derby, a third in the 2015 G1 Santa Anita Derby April 4 and another third in the G2 San Felipe Stakes – his graded stakes bow March 7, 2015. The rather inconsistent Bolo has placed in two of his last three starts overall (all six career on this track) and will be out to bounce back off an uncharacteristic effort from post 3. Mike Smith rides.

Sawyer’s Hill – has 17 career starts for trainer Kristin Mulhall – five wins, two seconds and three third place finishes. He enters on a two race win streak (both in gate-to-wire fashion) – an Allowance Optional Claiming last time out here March 30 and a Claiming on this track February 26. Before that was a fourth in an Allowance Optional Claiming here in February and a third in a similar race at Del Mar in November. He had consecutive sevenths in minor stakes action before that – the Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate in September and the Green Flash Handicap at Del Mar in August. He was at his best in 2014 when he recorded consecutive runner-up finishes in graded stakes action – the G2 Twilight Derby and the G2 Del Mar Derby but has failed to place in his three other graded stakes starts. Sawyer’s Hill has been good lately against lesser competition, has won two straight starts on Santa Anita lawn, looks to be in career-best form and hopes to finally record a first graded stakes score from the outside post 7. Martin Pedroza gets the call.

Twentytwentyvision – defending runner-up in this race has hit the board in 15 of 17 career starts for trainer Richard Mandella – five wins, three seconds and seven third place finishes. He arrives off consecutive disappointing sevenths – the G1 Santa Anita Handicap here March 11 and the G2 San Marcos Stakes here February 4 after consecutive thirds – the minor Lure Stakes here October 30 and the G2 John Henry Turf Championship on this track October 2. Before that was a nice win in the minor Rolling Green Stakes at Golden Gate September 5, a third in the G1 Shoemaker Mile June 4, another third in the G3 American Stakes in May and a runner-up finish in the 2016 Thunder Road Stakes in April – all on this track. Twentytwentyvision was competitive at this time last year and hops to be again with Flavien Prat guiding him from gate 2.

Farhaan – Phil D’Amato trainee won a couple of minor stakes races in 2013/2014 and has eight wins, three seconds and three third place finishes in 30 career starts. He has failed to place in three of his last four starts however – a runner-up finish last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming here March 9 followed an ugly eleventh in the G2 Bold Ruler Handicap at Belmont Park October 29, a sixth in the G2 Commonwealth Turf Cup at Laurel Park September 24 and a fourth in the G2 Bernard Baruch Handicap at Saratoga September 5. Before that was a two race win streak against lesser competition – a Waiver Claiming August 19 and a Claiming July 24. Farhaan looks to hit the board in graded stakes company for the first time in his sixth try – from gate 6 with Tyler Baze guiding him.

Perfectly Majestic – Robert Hess trained gelding has placed in 18 of 23 career starts – four wins, seven seconds and seven third place finishes. He finished tenth in the 2017 San Francisco Mile at this time last year and has been just OK since. Last time out was a decent second in the minor Joe Hernandez Stakes here March 4 after a ninth in the G2 San Marcos Stakes February 4 and a sixth in the G3 San Gabriel Stakes January 7 – both on this track. Before that was an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Del Mar November 19, a second in the minor Lure Stakes here October 30 and a fourth in the G2 City of Hope Mile on this track October 8. Perfectly Majestic has been decent against lesser company and will be in search of his first ever stakes score Saturday. Kent Desormeaux has the mount from the rail.

Fabozzi – has nine career starts for trainer Mark Glatt with three wins, a second and two third place finishes. He makes his graded stakes debut in decent form – a second last time out in an Allowance Optional Claiming here March 30 followed a fourth in his only stakes action to date – the minor Joe Hernandez Stakes on this track March 4 and consecutive Allowance Optional Claiming scores with the last coming here February 4.Fabozzi has been good against lesser competition and hopes to carry the momentum in his major step up in competition. Corey Nakatani has the mount from post 5.

Mithgaal – Doug O’Neill trained gelding had 14 starts in Europe with four wins, a second and three third place finishes – he won his last two starts there this past winter. He has just one North American start and it was a disappointing one – a sixth in the minor Santana Mile Stakes on this track in his stakes debut April 1. Mithgaal was good at home and hopes it finally translates on North American soil Saturday. Rafael Bejarano has been tabbed to ride from gate 4.
