2017 Selene Stakes Preview, Entries & Odds

OffTrackBetting.com – The G2 Selene Stakes comes our way this Sunday, May 21 from Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario, A group of three year old fillies will saddle up and go 1 1/16 miles on Woodbine’s All Weather Track for the winner’s share of the $125,000 purse.

A field of 10 will take to the track in the Selene Stakes – race 8 on Woodbine’s Sunday schedule. Post time is 4:55 PM. Here is a peek into the past performances of all 10 combatants for this G3 stakes.

2017 Selene Stakes Entries at Woodbine Racetrack

Enstone 5-2 – has placed in five of seven career starts for trainer Mark Casse – two wins and three second place finishes. She arrives off a nice 2 3/4 length win in the minor Fury Stakes here April 30 which followed an OK second behind Ghostly Presence in the minor Princess Elizabeth Stakes November 12, a maiden score October 23 here and a fourteenth in her only graded stakes action to date – the G1 Natalma Stakes on this track in September. Enstone is the most experienced entry in the field and has been trending upward ahead of this weekend. She tries for a second straight stakes win (fist graded stakes) from post 7 with Patrick Husbands guiding the tepid morning line favorite.

Grizzel 3-1 – Irish bred Michael Doyle trained filly has 12 career starts with three wins and two third place finishes. She had two wins and two third place finishes in nine starts at home before posting consecutive OK fourth place finishes in her first two North American starts – the minor Melody of Colors Stakes February 25 and the minor Sanibel Island Stakes April 1 – both at Gulfstream. She broke through last time out with an Allowance score on this track April 28. Grizzel had failed to place in five starts prior to her win last time out and will try to build on that effort from gate 2. David Moran rides the intriguing second choice.

Gale Force 5-1 – Mark Casse trained filly has a win and a second place finish in her four career starts. Her debut wan an impressive one – a nice win in the G3 Mazarine Stakes on this track October 8 – a result that was followed by a disappointing seventh in an Allowance at Churchill Downs November 16 and a pedestrian fifth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Gulfstream January 1. Last time out was an OK second in an Allowance on this track April 28. Gale Force is the only graded stakes winner in the field, has posted a win and a second in two starts on this track and could be a factor Sunday. Eurico Rosa Da Silva gets the call on the morning line third choice from the outside post 10.

Ghostly Presence 6-1 – has two wins in her five career starts for trainer Roger Attfield – all at Woodbine. She races in graded stakes company for the first time Sunday off a fourth in the minor Fury Stakes April 30 after a nice win in the minor Princess Elizabeth Stakes November 12 and consecutive off-the-board finishes in two races on this track in the fall, including the minor Ontario Debutante Stakes in September. Ghostly Presence tries for a second stakes score Sunday and arrives in decent form. Steven Ronald Bahen will be in the irons from gate 6.

Silhouette 8-1 – has a win and two runner-up finishes in her four career starts for trainer Josie Carroll. She races in stakes company for the first time Sunday having finally broken maiden last time out on this track April 23. Before that was a fourth and a pair of seconds in MSW races to start her career. Silhouette makes an enormous step up in competition off a career-best effort and will have Jesse Campbell in the reins from gate 8.

Financial Recovery 10-1 – Catherine Day Phillips trained filly has a win and a second place finish in five career starts – all on this track. She steps into graded stakes company for the first time off a second place finish behind Enstone in the minor Fury Stakes April 30, a fifth in the minor Cup and Saucer Stakes October 22 and a maiden score October 7. She has been decent in her last three starts and shoots for a career-defining win Sunday from gate 4. Rafael Manuel Hernandez will be in the reins.

Sister Nation 12-1 – has placed in four of six career starts for trainer Michael De Paulo but has yet to break maiden – she has three runner-up finishes and a third place finish so far. She enters on the heels of two of those second place finishes – the minor Star Shoot Stakes on this track April 16 and the minor Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway Park February 4. Before that was a fourth in the minor Old Hat Stakes at Gulfstream January 17 and another second in the minor Glorious Song Stakes on this track in November. Sister Nation has been knocking on the door of her first win and hopes to get it Sunday in her graded stakes debut. Gary Boulanger has been tabbed to ride from the rail.

Superduper Sky 15-1 – has placed in four of six career starts for trainer Mark Casse – two wins, a second and a third place finish. She steps into stakes company for the first time Sunday off an Allowance Optional Claiming score here April 22 which followed a fourth in the minor Joseph E. Spanky Broussard Memorial Stakes at Fair Grounds February 11 and a maiden score on that track February 14. She placed in two straight MSW races on this track before that. Superduper Sky has been trending upward the last five months and will try to keep the roll going from post 5 Sunday. Jerome Lermyte gets the call.

Addictive 15-1 – will hit the track for the third time for trainer Bill Mott having posted one win so far. Last time out was a distant eighth in an Allowance Optional Claiming at Aqueduct April 21 which followed a nice maiden score at first asking – at Tampa Bay March 5. Addictive looked OK in her first start but struggled last time out. She hopes for a strong bounce back in her stakes debut – from post 9 with Luis Contreras scheduled to ride.

Cindervella 20-1 – has a win, a second and a third place finish in six career starts for trainer Michael De Paulo – all at Woodbine. Last time out was a sixth in the minor Fury Stakes April 30 after an OK second in the minor Ontario Lassie Stakes November 30, a sixth in the minor Princess Elizabeth Stakes November 12 and a nice win in the minor South Ocean Stakes October 1. Cindervella races in graded stakes company for the first time Sunday in so-so form from post 3 with Alan Garcia aboard.
