2017 Futurity Stakes Entries at Belmont Park

Happy Like a Fool

Wesley Ward trained filly has a win and a second-place finish in her three career starts. She debuted with a four -length win at Keeneland April 9 and took her show to Britain where she posted two OK results. Last time out was a sixth in the Group 2 Sky Bet Lowther Stakes at York August 24 after an OK second as favorite in the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot in June. Happy Like a Fool has been decent so far in her career and shoots for a first graded/group stakes score – this time against the boys from gate 2. Tyler Gaffalione rides.

Mojivation

Todd Pletcher trained colt has one win in his two career starts – that coming in frontrunning fashion in his debut at Saratoga July 29 – he posted a field-best 86 Beyer Speed Figure in that race. He stepped up into stakes company last time out and finished a disappointing seventh at 3-1 odds after tiring in the G1 Hopeful Stakes on that track September 4. Mojivation looked good in his first career start and will be out to prove his last starts was the exception, not the rule. John Velazquez will try to accomplish that from gate 4.

Engage

Has two career starts for trainer Chad Brown – both as favorite in MSW races at Saratoga. He arrives off a win September 4 which followed a second in her debut August 5. Engage has shown improvement already and hopes to make the most of his stakes debut Saturday. Jose Ortiz is scheduled to ride from the outside post 7.

Barry Lee

Has three career starts for trainer Horacio DePaz with two wins – he was favorite in all three starts. Last time out was one of those wins – the listed $75,000 Arlington-Washington Futurity September 9 which followed a disappointing eighth in his only graded stakes action – the G2 Saratoga Special August 13 and a maiden score at first asking – at Laurel Park July 14. Barry Lee arrives off a career-best effort and will be out to avenge his only graded stakes result when he leaves from post 3 with Joel Rosario aboard.

Red Peril

Will race for the second time for trainer Rohan Crichton having posted a good win so far – that coming on this track October 14. He tries to build on a nice effort when he leaves from the rail with Luca Panici in the saddle.

Smooth B

Has five career starts for trainer Robert Reid with two wins and a second-place finish. He steps into graded stakes company for the first time Saturday off an Allowance Optional Claiming score at Laurel Park September 29, a fifth in the listed Sapling Stakes at Monmouth Park September 2 and a maiden score at Parx August 17. Smooth B steps up in so-so form and will chase a career-best effort from post 5. Sheldon Russell gets the call.
